Good tunes, but the lyrics are superficial

For the first few listens, the album is great- seemingly perfect almost. I saw Goss perform live and it was really, really great- the best performance I've seen in Boston in ten years. The songs Mississippi Red, Put A Record On, and Dive Bars should be playing on radio stations all across America.

However, once you start to pay attention to the lyrics, a lot of the words seem to be written more for their phonetic benefits rather than anything truly meaningful. Most of these lines sound like they're being forced into sounding profound.

This album is still worth buying for his great voice and soulful but catchy tunes, but most of the lyrics sound superficial.

Best Acoustic Album I own.

This record by JMG, is by far my favorite album right now. He has such a cool style and sound that separates him from all other artists of his genre. Not only can I listen to all of the songs on the album, I have found a special way to love all of them, and can use this disc as a great mood changer. I highly suggest you give this album a shot, and promise you won't be disappointed.

Put THIS record on

What a great effort from Goss. From the romatic lyricism of "Brookyln" to the tongue-in-cheek "Coffee and Wine" and the drunken sailor-esque "Dive Bars," his songwriting continues to reach new heights. Painting pictures from small towns and big cities alike, Goss' voice ranges from soft and smooth to brash and husky, and he pulls off each equally well. If you're a fan of any of the new and creative songwriters on the modern folk scene, including Ray LaMontagne, Damien Rice, Josh Ritter or others, pick this up and you won't be dissapointed. And he's got a great backing band to boot.
