old soul / new sound
I've been a fan of Jack's musical stylings since first hearing him in the quaint clubs of boston and new york. his delivery is both empassioned and comforting; old world and contemporary. his emotional connection and delivery lure you in and fully involve you in his musical exploration. "a small blue thing" builds upon his past releases and doesn't disappoint; Lighthouse was great... Strange Weather was fantastic. Small Blue Thing is not to be missed. A must-listen for any blues, jazz or vocal fans.
My Brush with Greatness.
Jack Donahue has a quality in his voice and music that is hypnotic. It reminds me of the "glamour days" of smooth jazz.The music has some really tight harmonies that are unexpected and totally captivating. The two songs that have my attention, i.e. I find myself humming around town, are "A Small Blue Thing," and "Busy Being Blue." This is nice relaxing music that makes one mellow - it surely doesn't put you to sleep!! Jack's voice, the music, the harmonies ... this is a total package of sophistacation, lounge music, and music to create an atmosphere of sudection and playfulness. Now I can say, "I knew Jack Donahue when we went to college together." (It's a bit of a stretch, but it will pass in a court of law.)
Beautiful and Daring!
As someone who's followed Mr. Donahue's career for some time now, I can say that this is his grandest, most ambitious project to date. I also think it's one of his best. This is definitely a risk-taking recording with a very eclectic set of songs and arrangements, but thanks to Donahue's warm and emotive voice, it is always listenable and accessible. From jazz great Fred Hersch's somber bossa "Stars" to the Cole Porter classic "Get out of Town" to the pop remake of Abby Lincoln's great "Throw it Away" to Donahue's own Brazilian-Tinged "Chamego", Donahue is able to seamlessly integrate a variety of moods and textures into an overall great listening experience. Highly recommended.
