Just the Album I Was Looking For!

I've known Mew for a while now, but only by a few albums, like Frengers and No More Stories. This album has a different sound, and I like it A LOT. My favorite tracks: Then I Run, No Shadow Kick, Snowflake, and Coffee Break <3

Not for everyone. That goes for Mew fans.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think I'd have devout admiration for Mew if this were the only album they had. And thank God it isn't. I wouldn't play it down as useless either. But a fair share of these songs I don't enjoy and probably never will.

It's all about mood, though. There are times when I feel very drab and fed up with everything, and just need some sad and washy rock to get me through. And that's what most of this is. Drab rock. What keeps me tuned in is always Jonas's voice. It's high for a male, but sweet and on key. He's in his own world with this music and somehow, it's ok.

At live shows, Mew definitely goes back to this album for a few hits that people would actually want to hear performed. Wheels Over Me is catchy, upbeat, and sounds good. It also sounds technically difficult to play. And yet there's a humble nature about it that makes you appreciate it all the more. Not overly produced.

No Shadow Kick is also very unique and not like any other song on the album. It has a head-swaying beat with some swing to it, and Jonas sings it in Japanese, so God knows what it's about.

I Should Have Been a Tsin-Tsi (For You) is a beautiful up-beat song, with the most interesting high-pitched vocals I ever heard come out of Jonas. I thought it was Tickle-me-Elmo at first. But it is in fact Jonas. And the song is simply delightful. Like some other songs of Mew I appreciate, it's quite short. I later discovered that there are at least 4 versions of this song out there. One is their first demo (which is God awful), the next one is this one. Another was featured on a special edition of Frengers. And the other version is on their newly re-released Half the World Is Watching Me album. Do try to hear the other versions as well. This song as come a long way.

The other songs on this album are very drab, and not very pleasing. But it of course depends greatly on who you are. Panda and Web do seem quite beautiful when I'm in the mood and not feeling very creative. Snowflake can hit you in the right spot when you're feeling really down. But much of my life is spent feeling quite happy, and some part of me that indentified with this album just doesn't exist anymore. I suppose I can only give my opinion. Not a favorite Mew album. But still worth a look.

THANK YOU ITUNES!

What a nice thing for us that we get a 23 song version of this fantastic debut from a great band, Mew! It is not only convenient for me since I haven't seen it on local shops, but it is gracious. I love Mew!

Biography

Formed: Hellerup, Denmark

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The members of space pop innovators Mew first met in the seventh grade in Hellerup, Denmark. Before they could even play instruments, the ambitious youths — singer Jonas Bjerre, guitarist Bo Madsen, bassist Johan Wohlert, and drummer Silas Graae — were ready to make music together, although they initially failed as a band called Orange Dog. Madsen briefly spent time in the United States before the guys came back together in their late teens as Mew. Inspired by My Bloody Valentine, the...
