Caution: Obscure refrences ahead

I was on the fence as to whether to get this CD or not. When you own over 200 Christmas CD's it's hard to find something truely unique. Shawn Lee did not disapoint. First of all, it's really hard to get a good feel for the tunes from each of the 30 second clips provided. You can't get the whole flavor of this CD from the soundbites. But once I purchased the entire CD it went straight to the top of my "Play Often" list. I'm not sure where Shawn Lee came from but he is defenitely original and as funky as he wants to be. I could easily see him writing theme songs for 70's TV cop shows. There's a little James Bond undertone to "My Favorite Things" and I swear I hear "Hey There Georgie Girl" every time I listen to "What A Wonderful World". (Just TRY to get that out of your mind now.) You can have your own fun finding all the other musical refererances and influences, but my favorite funky treat from Santa's bag is the wonderfully House-of-the-Rising Sun-infused version of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen". Or is it a God Reset Ye Merry Gentlemen themed version of the Animals classic? Either way, it's the wickedest Christmas number to come along since Buster Poindexter went looking for the man in red. But it takes more than a random 30 seconds of the tune to get all that. Granted, this CD is not for everyone. But if your musical tastes run somewhere outside the bag you won't be disappointed with A Very Ping Pong Christmas. It's not Bing Crosby tap dancing with Danny freakin' Kaye. Think more along the lines of Clark Griswold sharing a Sam Adams holiday lager with Esquivel. Yeah, Esquivel. Look him up. Shawn Lee, can I get this on vinyl?

My New Fave Christmas Album

Shawn Lee has dropped the funk bomb on Christmas, and it's a daym good thing. I stumbled across this version of "Carol of the Bells" and was hooked. Carol of the Bells with electric bass and distorted guitar? I know, it seems as if that wouldn't work, but man, does it ever. The "House of the Rising Sun" treatment done on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is pure genius! And "Do You Hear What I Hear?" is funk straight-up with a lime chaser. All the little twsits that make their way into each song will make you want to play them all again, just to get a better listen. My feeble attempts at putting this sound into words will fail miserably. So, let's just say that you took 60's rock, infused it with 70's funk, threw in a few curveballs (is that a sitar in "Little Drummer Boy"?) and applied that sound to Christmas Classics. Your end result would be this album. This album joins Vince's Guaraldi's "Charlie Brown Christmas" and all of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas works in the upper-eschelons of classic, outside-the-box Christmas music.

One Word.......

BRILLIANT!
