Album Review

Singer Mel Tormé and pianist George Shearing make a perfect team, bringing out the best in each other. With the assistance of bassist John Leitham and drummer Donny Osborne, the swinging, witty duo performs a variety of standards, including Noël Coward's "Someday I'll Find You," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "Anyone Can Whistle," and a couple of medleys highlighted by a humorous six-song "New York, New York Medley." All of the Tormé/Shearing collaborations are quite enjoyable and highly recommended as some of their best work of the 1980s.

Fine Wine, Very Fine Wine

"Fine wine, very fine wine...", that's what Tommy Hawkins, AKA the Jazz Hawk, the DJ for my local jazz radio station, KJZZ (K-Jazz) said to describe this live collaboration of two great artists at the Paul Masson Winery. Oh how I wish I could have been sipping some lovely spirits as an audience member that night so long ago. Thank God for recordings of such events. The cut that Tommy played from this record was the sublime version of "Midnight Sun". The sample here on I-Tunes does not fully display the clarity of Torme's lyric interpretation or the symbiotic accompaniment of Shearing that lives in the same space with the singer but never overwhelms Torme's performance. On the strength of that one cut, I bought the whole album here at I-Tunes and know that I have now got one of the gems of recorded jazz in my collection. If you also love flawless musical diamonds, take my recommendation and download this cd. It'll dazzle your ears.

For a long stretch of time in the 1950s and early '60s, George Shearing had one of the most popular jazz combos on the planet — so much so that, in the usual jazz tradition of distrusting popular success, he tended to be underappreciated. Shearing's main claim to fame was the invention of a unique quintet sound, derived from a combination of piano, vibraphone, electric guitar, bass, and drums. Within this context, Shearing would play in a style he called "locked hands," which he picked up and...
