Album Review

Aaliyah waited nearly five years to deliver her third album, but considering that she was essentially growing up — it was the equivalent of spending time in college — when she came back with an eponymous record in the summer of 2001, she came back strong. Aaliyah isn't just a statement of maturity and a stunning artistic leap forward, it's one of the strongest urban soul records of its time. Where such peers as Macy Gray and Jill Scott work too hard to establish their ties with classic soul, Aaliyah revels in the present, turning out a pan-cultural array of sounds, styles, and emotions. This sound is entirely unfamiliar — part of the pleasure is how contemporary it sounds — but she sounds just as comfortable within the sonicscapes of Timbaland as Missy Misdemeanor Elliott and, possibly, less self-conscious. Aaliyah never oversings, never oversells the songs — this comes on easy and sultry, and there's a lot of substance here, in terms of the songwriting and the songs themselves. Urban albums rarely come any better than this, and there haven't been many records better than this in 2001, period.

It's A Start . . .

Thank you so much, iTunes, for finally adding these wonderful songs by Aaliyah. Now I'll ask: will you please add the rest of her amazing music? As well as the rest of her music videos? I sure hope you will! :-)

Before Beyoncé, There was Aaliyah...

Before her tragic death in 2001, Aaliyah had it all. She had the looks, she had class, and best of all, she had great and enjoyable music. Compare her to Beyoncé if you must, but Beyoncé can never come close to the greatness that was Aaliyah and her eponymous (and experimental) final album. 1. We Need a Resolution (featuring Timbaland) - Aaliyah opens up the album with a funky, hip hop sounding track produced, written by, and featuring Timbaland. It definitely starts the album off on the right foot. 2. Loose Rap (featuring Static Major) - This one's another hip hop-y song. While not the best track on the album, it's certainly a welcomed addition and adds a distinct blend of hip hop and electronica to the album. 3. Rock the Boat - This song was released as the second single off the album (she died in a plane crash on the way home from filming the music video). It's got a great reggae feel to it, and her angelic voice pleasantly graces the track's funky beats. 4. More Than a Woman - A nice song with good music that makes you want to get up and do the same dance that Aaliyah does in the music video for this song! 5. Never No More - Again, one of the more weaker songs from the album, but still a welcomed addition. 6. I Care 4 U - A nice soul ballad that was recorded 5 years earlier in 1996 in hopes of making the final cut of the album "One in a Million". Unfortunately, it did not because by the time Aaliyah finished recording this song, the album was already mastered. Thankfully, it was added on this album, and is sad to listen to now. A very moving track. 7. Extra Smooth - For some reason it's titled "Rap Tracks Publishing" here, but this song is one of the weaker ones on the album, but still very good. 8. Read Between the Lines - This song has its own distinct style and is very fun to listen to. 9. U Got Nerve - Another fun song. You can really hear the genuine aggression and emotion in Aailyah's voice on this track. 10. I Refuse - A powerful and moving ballad-ish song that recieved airplay in France beginning in September of 2001. While this is the longest song on the album, it's one of the best songs on here. 11. It's Whatever - This song is very sweet. It's light and fun. 12. I Can Be - This is probably my favorite song on the album. It's got a rock 'n' roll feel to it, and I think it really works here. 13. Those Were The Days - A simple and fun song in which Aaliyah tells her lover he's not the man he used to be. 14. What If - In vein of "I Can Be", this is another song that has a great rock 'n' roll feel to it. 15. Try Again - A funky dance song that I'm sure everyone knows and loves. This version of the album posted here on iTunes is the original 2001 non-U.S. version, with bonus track "Try Again". On U.S. pressings of the album, the main album was the same, but "Try Again" was omitted, and a hidden track called "Messed Up" was appended to the end of "What If". In 2004, the album was re-released in countries outside the U.S. and it came with 3 bonus tracks ('Try Again' was not counted as a bonus track because it is part of the main album in non-U.S. countries). Those bonus tracks are 16. Miss You, 17. Don't Know What To Tell Ya, and 18. Erica Kane. The tracks are also available on her 2002 posthumous compilation titled "I Care 4 U", along with several other previously unreleased tracks. Check that one out too, as well as her 2 other studio albums ("Age Ain't Nothing But a Number" and "One in a Million").

Biography

Born: January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, NY

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '90s, '00s

A star in the R&B world before she was even out of her teens, Aaliyah's promising career was tragically cut short by her death in a plane crash at age 22. Even with only three albums under her belt, she'd already earned a place as a talented trendsetter among the R&B elite. Following a successful transition to a more mature image, Aaliyah played a major role in popularizing the stuttering, futuristic production style that consumed hip-hop and urban soul in the late '90s. Her work with Timbaland,...
