So whatever
I'm a huge fan of iCarly, but I am not a fan of Miranda Cosgrove having a music career. She has a voice that needs to grow with time and the material she is working with isn't stellar and I think she suffers for that. Plus, the girl has no rhythm. In her music videos she looks so stiff and uncomfortable. She's coming out against people like Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Jordan Pruitt...and with a little bit of fine tuning Selena Gomez. Miranda Cosgrove just can't hang on their level. I think people want to make her the Nickolodeon Miley Cyrus and pushed her into something maybe she wasn't quite ready for. But I guess we'll see.
Please
Go listen to the original version of this song by the Sugababes. Its much much better. I'm glad to see America's youth taking a liking to English music but it always makes me sad when they don't do the best job of covering a song and most of America's audience never knows there's a better version out there.
A little bit of a let down, even for an EP
It's hard to make a pop song not sound catchy. This EP is no exception. Despite that, the catchiness is probably the only thing it has going for it. The EP is five tracks long, an average length for an EP. But the first track, About You Now, is the same song as on the iCarly soundtrack. So that leaves four new songs, two of which are remixes of songs she's already sung. So that leaves just two songs of new material. First though, for the remixes, my opinion is that it's a little too early for her to be remixing her own work. Before the release of this EP, she had five songs released, three of which were covers of other bands' songs. And now, two of them are remixed. For the content of the songs themselves, I say that they're semi-pathetic remixes. The voice tracks sound exactly the same, just new music in the background. It sounds like the composers just added some different sound effects, maybe a bass in the background, and called it a remix. For all we know, Miranda Cosgrove could easily not even be aware her songs are already remixed. As for the new songs, let's start with FYI. Lyrically, I'm not one to judge, not being in the target audience, but in my opinion it's rather boring. The phrases "tragic darts to piece my heart", as well as "only blood" are nice inclusions, at least to me. And every time I hear "rejection", I immediately think it's going to be rhymed with "for your own protection". Not like that makes sense in that context, that's just expected for me and rhymes somewhat better than "information". Musically, I can't say much. It's a pop song, the chord changes are a little catchy, but nothing special. I do, however, like the pre-chorus change A-E-F-G; it seems a little unexpected and provides a nice build-up for the chorus. Party Girl is the last song to talk about on the EP. It's got an okay guitar riff (which seems to cover most the song). The faster pace is different and that's okay, but not a major change in helping the song sound better than any of her others. The pre-chorus is a rather generic chant build-up, but to a chorus that doesn't differ as much from the verses. The bridge was just as uneventful as well. Once again, I can't comment too much on the lyrical content, but the naïve chorus line "You can make the Earth into a better place." did make me laugh on the inside a little bit. Overall, not that great, but at least it can keep my mind distracted for a while in between other songs, without boring me to death. (Also, 1-5 is a hard rating; I couldn't chose between 2 or 3. I gave it the benefit of the doubt though.)
