Album Review
As expected, Mad Season sounds like a cross between Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam, taking the ponderous seriousness of Alice and PJ's '90s update of winding '70s guitar rock. Most of Above is quite somber, surpassing the meditations of Temple of the Dog in its dour tone. Staley's voice has always worked well in this setting, yet he frequently has had more compelling material than the webs of guitars that form the basis of Above. Much of the music on the album meanders without much direction, yet there are flashes of invention, particularly in Staley's work, with McCready contributing a few tasty licks. However, it commits the fatal flaw of a side project — it sounds like one.
Customer Reviews
I cannot believe...
That the iTunes review was so shoddy. This is a fabulous album. Layne's voice is beautiful and amazing. The music is alternatively enchanting, pounding, and devastating. This is neither Alice in Chains, nor Pearl Jam, but rather a band all of its own right, with plenty of character and exceeding talent. When I choose to listen to this album, there is never a track that I skip. Every piece is strong in and of itself. My 9 year old son says that Mad Season is his favorite band - not because he has been conditioned to like it like the popular music he often hears, not because I play it for him all the time, and not because he understands the meaning of the lyrics: he truly feels the emotion of each song and the angelic quality of Layne's voice. This album is a real classic.
Simply - Amazing
This is one of those rare records that you own in your collection that makes your entire collection that much more special, complete, and whole. It is a shame more people don't know about this amazing album. "River of Deceit" is the radio hit, but "Wake Up" is the best song here, especially at 3 min 55 secs into the song. You can feel the depth of Staley's cry to God here. It's beautiful, tragic, and haunting. Above is the most stunning exercise of pain put into music that you will ever here. You should not miss this ablum, it is a classic beyond words.
Staley+Pain+Lyrics = Get it
This is a must-own album. “Wake Up” is, quite seriously one of those songs you will play over and over and over and I would rank in my top 10 of all time. I challenge anyone to find a singer dosing out more beauty, rage, and pain combined with such solid percussion and guitar. You will need to make sure your stereo is up to the challenge of the opening bass. “River of Deceit” again hits on this trend with another barrage of some of the best lyrics ever put down. I have heard that the group wrote these two songs in the first few hours of practice...myth? The remainder of the album is pretty hard (which is OK), yet I find the lyrics to be a little simplistic on some songs reative to Alice in Chains / Pearl Jam. A great sleeper album and #1 and #3 would be the best $1.98 you ever spent.
