Album Review

Absolution for Idiots and Addicts arrived a month before Less Than Jake dropped In with the Out Crowd, their official follow-up to 2003's Anthem (since B Is for B-Sides was really just a spare track roundup from Anthem's sessions). The band has long assembled poppy, ska-infused punk that was largely skank-along-able and fun even if the songs were often based around lyrics of disillusionment and cynicism. It hurts to say so, but besides an overwhelming weariness, not so much satisfaction appears on this release. Things certainly could have been worse, but they also could have been way better. "Overrated (Everything Is)" has zero discernible horns, a fact that would be gladly overlooked due to the song's catchy nature, except that the catchiness is in that mall-punk disposable sort of way (think along the lines of a better "She's Gonna Break Soon"). The next two songs are EP-only additions, the other tracks slated to appear on the aforementioned full-length. Bringing back the horns, "Negative Sides of Optimistic Eyes" (on which Roger takes over singing duties) and "We, the Uninspired" sound more like classic Less Than Jake although just a little less fun, the latter running on bouncy, underlying riffs that frustratingly never reach that level of BAM! hinted at throughout. The polished closing track, co-written with Mark Hoppus, is weirdly the most memorable, since on paper the addition of synths under an acoustic guitar pretty much screams hardcore fan-alienation. Somehow, though, the introspective song works. Starting the EP off is the line "Maybe I'm jaded and bored, always looking for more," and that's exactly how some listeners are likely to feel at the completion of Absolution's four songs. Maybe the EP is being looked at too critically, but it's only because after more than ten years together, faith says that Less Than Jake still has more left in them. Too bad this EP isn't the most encouraging.

Absolutely Addictive

Less Than Jake's new EP is a nice sneak peak at their upcoming album, "In With The Out Crowd," which is scheduled for release on May 16th on Sire Records. The EP features for songs, two that will be included on the full-length album and two tracks which didn't make the cut. "Overrated (Everything Is)" is simply excellent. With every album Less Than Jake's music changes and grows, and this song is a perfect example of how that growth is still occuring. I am, however, an old school fan and I don't like the lack of horns in this track, but it's still catchy and similar to some of their songs on "Borders and Boundaries." "Negative Sides Of Optimistic Eyes," which won't be on the upcoming album, is a fast and fun song that sounds more like traditional pop-punk than the usual brand of ska-infused punk Less Than Jake fans live for. "We, the Uninspired" is also an EP-exclusive track. As soon as the track starts you can instantly tell it's Less Than Jake - it sounds like something straight off of "Losing Streak" or "Hello Rockview." I'm glad to say there's a horn part in this song. It's minimal - but better than nothing. "The Rest of My Life" might just become the first single on "In With The Out Crowd." It's an interesting departure from LTJ's typical style. It's a slower, more regretful tune that sums up life as a 20-something. Definitely download this track!! All in all, "Absolution For Idiots And Addicts" is worth buying as a loyal Less Than Jake fan - and for newcomers, this EP might just spark interest in LTJ's previous work.

Seriously People, Give it a Chance

To Start off, i am a huge less than jake fan (since the end of the losing streak tour at least). Its not like i just climbed on at "the science of selling yourself short" when it was considered for the themesong for the OC. Reading some of the other reviews, ive noticed that people think that this is Less Than Jake circa 1999. Nay. This is not the Less Than Jake of old. This isnt Hello Rockview less than jake, nor even boarders and boundaries less than jake. This is post anthem less than jake. everyone seems to think "hey, less than jake, this must be just like all thier other albumns. i'll buy this because i know that people never change." You can't look at this and want what it isnt. What it is: A great 4 song ep that is a new ltj that rocks just as much as the old ltj but in a different way. What it isnt: Pezcore, Losing Streak, Losers..., Hello Rockview, Boarders and Boundaries. Another thing, when you have 5 guys out of what used to be near 10, you limit your horn line. Of course they're not going to have as many ska songs as before. Its not that they dont want to, but they're unable to. The one thats on here: amazing. As far as sellouts? are they really? If you were walking down the street and a guy dressed in a very nice pinstriped suit walked up and said "hey, if i can put your face on one everyday item that everyone uses and in return you'll make 50% profit" would you turn it down? who cares if they "sold out?" Have you gone to a show lately? they play 2 or 3 new songs, then they get to Pezcore, Losing Streak and Rockview. This is the Old Less Than Jake with a new face that screams "We're just like we were (awesome), but totally different (in a good way)."

Great But......

This EP is a nice sneek peak at LTJ's upcomming album "In With The Out Crowd" but Im an old school LTJ fan and this is far different from LTJ's older work. There are very little horns and ska. But overall LTJ has made some catchy songs and it is worth buying.

Biography

Formed: 1992 in Gainesville, FL

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Although formed in 1992 as a power pop trio with heavy punk leanings, Less Than Jake steadily transformed into a ska-inspired punk band with the addition of a horn section. Vocalist/guitarist Chris Demakes, bassist Shaun, and drummer/lyricist Vinnie Fiorello formed the first incarnation of the group, which took root in Gainesville, FL. After Shaun became the group's roadie, however, he was replaced by bassist Roger Manganelli, who picked up the instrument just to join the band. During 1993-1994,...
