Album Review

It's too bad that Nevermind had to make this sort of rock unfashionable in the early '90s. Anchored by the world-class chops of guitarist Paul Gilbert and bassist Billy Sheehan, Mr. Big's debut album is an adrenaline-fueled dose of pure rock & roll attitude. Don't let the big hair and leather pants fool you; much like Bon Jovi, Mr. Big is definitely not in the same category as '80s pop-metal bands such as Poison. One difference is the fact that Mr. Big is composed of monstrously talented musicians. Witness, for example, the ascending guitar/bass figure in the beginning of "Addicted to that Rush" or the unison hits and strong groove to "Wind Me Up" or "Merciless." Eric Martin's sophomoric lyrics are admittedly the weakest link here ("Zip the lipstick on/Like BBQ sauce"), which often distract from his fine gritty voice, which is somewhere in between Steven Tyler and Steve Perry. The songwriting is also very strong, with the ballads "Had Enough" and "Big Love" especially showing the depth of Mr. Big's skill. At the same time, when they want to lay it down, they lay it down. The aforementioned "Addicted to that Rush" is both passionate and expertly delivered, with the band's technique and sheer drive complementing each other perfectly. Mr. Big was to equal the successes of their debut on their subsequent albums, but they were never again able to sustain that same level of quality over the course of an entire record.

Great Album!

I remember getting this when it first came out and expecting a shred album and instead got an album of great songs. Don't get me wrong, the shredding is here but it's the song writing that takes center stage. Highlights include Addicted To That Rush, Wind Me Up, Merciless and Blame It On My Youth. One question though, what happened to the original version of Had Enough? The sample posted here is not from the original album.

One of the best rock records of all time.

This was Mr. Big's debut album. Never before did a band have such a dynamic and powerful guitar duo. Billy Sheehan's fuzz distortion bass filled the room like no other and Paul Gilbert's unmatched style, speed and technique just blistered up every stage they took. Pat Torpey's solid and anchor steady style laid the foundation for the insanely gifted and rhaspy vocalist Eric Martin. The four stood tall as the band many others tried to be but didn't have a fraction of the talent. This record is life changing for me. This record taught me groove and feel like no other record had before. You can hear the fun they had making it, notably in the song Merciless. Had Enough is an emotional relationship song and, in my humble opinion, has the best guitar solo on the record. This record never leaves my iPod. Never.

Awesome Debut Indeed!!!

This band was a serious musicians rock group, Royalty if you will. The lineup: Billy Sheehan (David Lee Roth, Talas, UFO) on bass & vocals; Paul Gilbert (Racer X) on guitars; Pat Torpey (Impellitteri) on drums, percussion & vocals; and Eric Martin on lead vocals. Incredible virtuoso playing mixed with commercial sense equals great rock n' roll songs. The suggested cuts: "Addicted To That Rush" which features a guitar-bass battle between Sheehan and Gilbert, "Had Enough" is a great ballad that features Eric's voice, "How Can You Do What You Do" a song written by Jonathan Cain (Journey) that rocks your socks off and has pop appeal; "Rock & Roll Over" great tune and "30 Days In The Hole" awesome cover tune of the late great Steve Marriott. These guys wrote and played a perfect hard rock record. MR. BIG ROCKS!!!

Biography

Formed: 1988

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Mr. Big were one of the few "shredder" pop metal bands (translation: the bandmembers were highly proficient at their instruments) that prized songcraft as highly as virtuosity. The seeds for the group's formation were sown when bass player extraordinaire Billy Sheehan, often called "the Eddie Van Halen of bass," left David Lee Roth's solo band in 1988. Shortly thereafter, he began piecing together a new outfit comprised of former Racer X guitarist Paul Gilbert, drummer Pat Torpey, and singer Eric...
