We Saw It All

We saw it all. The night Z.A.Y. interrupted his mother and I watching a movie to rap the words to "Bad Boyz" to us for the very first time. The days in the studio making sure "Tempted" was mixed right, having to drive back from Indiana to Chicago because by the time we heard in the car that it wasn't mixed right, it was too late at night to go back. (I had left the studio with the doggoned car.) The making of "Tear The Club Up" in a partially flooded basement that Z.A.Y., Ricky Jay, and Z.A.Y.'s little brother Benjamin had to help clean up when the sump pump (and the backup) failed during a severe rain. The depression, frustration, anger, and finally, hope that gave rise to the song "Faith" after Z.A.Y. got suspended from school on some trumped-up, racist oke-doke. The late night collab work with B.E.N. and Ricky Jay. The 808's banging downstairs while his mother and I were trying to get some sleep upstairs. We saw it all, we heard it all, and we lived it all.

But Z.A.Y. did it all. He wrote the music and lyrics and made the right collaborations to make the hooks work and the music jam. He laid down the tracks. He directed and perfected the mixes. He missed the sleep and the meals. He did the work, made the sacrifices, and pursued his dream. He didn't go looking for someone to buy him and his music for a price. Instead, he looked for a way to make his music his own way on his own terms as his own man.

We didn't agree with every decision he made, and it wasn't all easy or fun and games, but in the end, it is Z.A.Y's life and Z.A.Y.'s music, and personally, we think its tight as hell. We wish there wasn't any profanity, but it isn't our music, it's his, and whether the version is explicit or clean, it's bumpin' either way.

We love Z.A.Y. and we love his music. We know you will too. And you ain't heard nothin' yet.
