Album Review

Nothing could prepare anyone for the full-on noise attack of Mike Patton's Adult Themes for Voices, not even Mr. Bungle fans. There isn't a note of music on the album; it's essentially noise. Recorded in hotel rooms during a Faith No More tour, all of the sounds are created from Patton's voice, which is pretty darn amazing. The album doesn't contain traditional songs as such; it plays as a continuous piece, and hence there are no obvious highlights. For instance, the track "Wuxipian Fantastique" could be described as sounding like a dying person taking his last breath, accentuated by harsh scraping noises, squeaks, and underwater sounds. And since there are a total of 33 pieces, it seems to be never-ending. Most may find this album hard to take, but fans of original, hard-hitting experimental music will eat it up. If you're sick of melody and musical instruments, your savior may be Mike Patton.

The Roots of Fantomas

I acquired this album when it came out years ago and was seriously confused by it, especially since I was a hardcore Faith No More and Mr. Bungle fan at the time (still am of course). For diehard Patton fans, and Fantomas fans in particular, this is a must for your collection. This album is experimental and hard to digest but it gives you a taste of what Patton was conceptualizing at the time. Like Fantomas' Delirium Cordia, it is not melodic but it has elements where you wish he would elaborate more on b/c they have the potential of being great songs. I consider these recordings the roots of Fantomas and it interesting to listen to them after what Fantomas has done up to now. If you are new to Patton then this is not for you, at least not yet.

retarded

I'm not giving this a horrible review, in case there may be something I just don't plain understand. But from the looks of it, this is retarded. A comment below gives it five stars and calls Mike Patton "genious", I know that being genius usually means going way out there, but I did this sort of thing with my friends when we were six, no one wanted to pay for it, or even listen to it for free for that matter, what makes this guy so special? And it's bull that some guy, a good musician though, screams into a recorder in a hotel and expects to sell it to people for ten bucks, and it's worse that people actually bought it. I know it's not meant to be music, but nor is it poetry, stories, or anything sensible. it's insane that some people would actually bother to purchase this and spend time listening to it.

Hard to Type When You're Deafened by the Genius of Mike Patton

Many people don't know that each track on this album was recorded with a 4-track player in individual hotel rooms across the country by Mike Patton. A little noisy in places, and tough to listen to all the way through... but a must-have for any Patton die-hard. Not the kind of thing that you'd listen to while driving all night to Vegas, but there's some innovative stuff here none the less. If you came looking for Faith No More, Bungle, or Peeping Tom... this... uh... may not be for you. Mike Patton's ideas are amazing anyway.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Mike Patton could very well be one of the most versatile and talented singers in rock music. He may be rock's most valuable player as well, since he has divided his time between at least five projects: Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, and an experimental solo career. Born in Eureka, CA, on January 27, 1968, Patton discovered his vocal talents when he and some high-school friends formed the whacked-out Mr. Bungle. The group touched upon almost every musical...
