iTunes Review

Advisory Committee possesses a haunting beauty that is difficult to pinpoint. First, there’s Mirah’s beguiling voice — delicate and lovely without sounding wispy or wounded, she annunciates clearly and presents her evocative lyrics about personal relationships, heartbreak, and separation in a unique and inventive way. Some songs get the full orchestral treatment and others are left in a more skeletal form, but each comes across as a unique creation that adds something to the whole album. On “Make It Hot” and “Mt. St. Helens” interesting sounds float in and out and even those heard only briefly make a lasting impression. “Body Below” rides a wave of strangely soothing crunching noise, while “Light the Match” features some fine pulsating accordion and sharp violin. Credit must be given to Phil Elvrum of the Microphones for his imaginative engineering and for assorted instrumental contributions. He also worked on Mirah’s prior release, You Think It’s Like This But Really It’s Like This, but he outdoes himself here. Start to finish, Advisory Committee is an emotionally affecting and gorgeous work.

In Response to 'A Quick Rant'

I hate to turn this into a message board of sorts, but I'd have to say that I'm quite offended by the review entitled 'A Quick Rant.' I was in fact one of those who was exposed to Mirah through So You Think You Can Dance, yet I don't worship Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, etc. I think you should be glad Mirah got exposure to a mass audience, she being not-quite a well-known indie artist, and that people of a different tastes got to experience a sound they may not have otherwise been able to experience. There are a million and one ways to be exposed to a new music and television is a huge way to do so in the music industry's ever-changing market. So instead of insulting those who have a new artist in their repitoire of music, let them be. I also take pride in my taste in music and would love to expand that of others' instead of putting them down for what they already listen to. By the way, this is a great album. So glad to have discovered this.

Ok so what...

yeah so obviously, The Garden has become very popular after being played on SYTYCD...who cares if thats the only reason why we found this song. It's a great song and Mirah has a great voice so it leads us to checking out her other songs....so instead of being bitter about it and ranting about it...just be happy that others like and get to enjoy her music now too...

I rarely give 5 star reviews

This is superb lo-fi indie. Mirah's voice is so pretty and the arrangements are delicate and interesting but do not overshadow her voice. it's truly flawless. I suggest: make it hot, mt. st. helens, apples in the trees, advisory committee, and everyone always loves cold cold water..

Biography

Years Active: '00s

Mirah (pronounced mear-rah) — full name Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn — was born on her mother's kitchen table. The daughter of artistic parents, the singer/songwriter had a passion for music from early childhood. While fronting the jazz band the Hot Set in Olympia, WA, playing wedding parties and bar mitzvahs to earn extra cash, Mirah began writing her own brand of lo-fi, slice-of-life indie pop, a style later compared to that of grrrl rocker Liz Phair. Powered only by her guitar and standout...
