Album Review

Former Emperor frontman Ihsahn's third solo album is closer to mainstream rock than its two predecessors, but is also a totally unique statement — and a brilliant one. Opening track "The Barren Lands" features progressive rock riffing, an almost art-funk rhythm, and guitar solos worthy of Living Colour. Faster tracks like "A Grave Inversed" are impeccably produced, abandoning black metal's ultra-trebly screech for an intricate thrash reminiscent of Rigor Mortis' Freaks — except for the honking, almost free jazz saxophone (!). The ten-minute "Undercurrent" heads into jazz fusion territory, with liquid, almost fretless-sounding bass underneath delicate, repeating guitar figures and drums that fall somewhere between Tool and Opeth's quieter moments. But it gets heavy, whipping into another furious yet utterly controlled art-thrash hurricane. It's not the only ten-minute track on the album, either; After ends with "On the Shores," which is almost Yakuza-esque in the way its guitars roar in aggressive yet majestic fashion while the saxophone skronks and squeals up front. This is a seriously mind-warping manifesto from a guy who helped create symphonic black metal with Emperor; he's now moved into the progressive, post-black metal territory occupied by artists like Nachtmystium and particularly Enslaved.

Customer Reviews

This Album is Amazing!

This CD is filled with counterpoint, and multiple time signatures, making it really complex.
The guitar is passionate, and there a is saxophone soloing in several several songs. This cd was just awesome to finish off the trio. Ihsahn is a genius.

The Best of the year...and then some

If you are a prog metal fan you should have already had this album for months. Ihsahn continues to stretch and grow as an artist. There is still a little Black Metal element to his work but if all you like or want to hear from Ihsahn is Black Metal chances are you left years ago. This album retains only some of the Black Metal vocals from Ihsahn's Emperor days, but what remains is some of the coldest, darkest, bleakest music ever made. Ihsahn finds new ways to evoke that bleakness that Emperor mastered by adding a mesmerizing saxophone in places and various other instruments/tempos/arrangements in others. There are also some amazing epic 10+ minute dirges that will deliver if you are so inclined to let them cast their spell on you. But that's just the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended). This album also contains some the starkest and most compelling melodies Ihsahn has ever written (sung/played). This music may not be for all tastes but if you are an adventurous listener this album is well worth checking out!

The visionary

I was first heavily skeptical...I mean...come one! Sax solos on a black metal album?
Well guess what...it works perfectly. This album is not black/death metal, it is not jazz nor classical. But it is all at the same time and in perfect balance and unison.
The use of 8-string guitars and fretless basses alone make it a landmark for black metal (or in this case, "POST black metal") projects. But Ihsahns musical atmosphere, vocals, and songwriting have evolved to a pristine and superior level on this record.

This is a perfect album, and I thank Ihsahn for releasing it.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

One of the leading figures (arguably the leading figure, at least from a musical perspective) in the history of Norwegian black metal, Ihsahn — born Vegard Sverre Tveitan, in Notodden, Norway, in 1975 — is best known as the singer, guitarist, and lead composer of the legendary band Emperor. That band, which would go on to earn Ihsahn and its members the highest of honors in the metal community, was born out of the demise of the group formation of an earlier project entitled Thou Shalt...
