Album Review

Although he's hardly a newcomer, Glenn Jones has been picked up by the new generation of acoustic guitarists, which has helped make this album a reality. He's made the most of this opportunity, showing himself to be, if not a disciple of the late John Fahey, then influenced by his expansive work. There's plenty going on in Jones' instrumentals, like the lovely bass-string melody that crops up during "David and the Phoenix," for example. He's not merely adept; he's a superbly adventurous player, who uses extended tunes as springboards for exploration, as in the celebratory "Freedom Raga." Using half and two/thirds capos on the fretboard creates some fascinating tunings, which give an added spark of individuality. Even on slide, Jones shows himself to be an exceptional instrumentalist (as on the two "Islands" pieces that frame the disc). Melodies and ideas cascade from his fingers; this is a man who deserves a much wider audience.

Customer Reviews

Sit in a dark room, put the headphones on, and you'll love it.

This album is truly a great find. You have to like instrumental music, otherwise it's noise to you. But if you like guitar music, sort of bluesy, slides, trippy, hypnotic, then you'll love this album. It is very, very cool.

Great

If you are interested in solo guitar music, this album really delivers. Listening closely, you can tell all the pieces are carefully crafted and deftly exectued. Glenn Jones, unlike some other soloists, creates variety from song to song while keeping a tight sense of style. He has a strong sense of melody and form so this music is not just showmanship. Though I will say that the track, David and the Phoenix, is epic! It takes a lot of endurance to pull that off. Overall one of my favorite albums I have purchased in recent memory.

Founding member of the enigmatic indie instrumental group Cul de Sac, Glenn Jones started playing guitar at age 14, opening the door on what would be a decades-long journey into inventive and exploratory sounds. Along with fellow Boston experimental musician Robin Amos, Jones formed Cul de Sac in 1990. The two would be the only constant members throughout the band's lifespan. Over the next two decades, the band would release a plethora of albums, singles, and EPs, focusing almost entirely on instrumental...
