Age WInters: Using the Forge From Our Father's Metal

Music to invade or hold the line by. The vocals are a breath of fresh air from all of the "cookie monster" and electric chair death vocals that permeate so much metal nowadays. Odin and Ozzy will feel young again. The power chords and guitar work are well arranged and crafted, the drummer rips, and the each song definitely has it's own character. "Gods of the Earth" is also fantastic. On the merit of the other two, I also seized their new new release "Warp Riders," but have been wearing out the other two so much, I haven't tapped it yet.

Get it. Get it now. Get into a car with biggest V8 you can find and listen to "Ebethron."

True heavy metal is back

The Sword brings back true heavy metal.

Some of the best heavy metal around!

Age of Winters, in addition to being fantastic debut for one of metal's greatest groups today, was, up until the release of Warp Riders, something I thought they would never be able to top, and is still easily one of the best metal albums in the last ten years (at least).

Starting from the beginning here, is Celestial Crown which is a good intro, but not the best offering on the album. It's followed up by the more thrashing Barael's Blade, and then by what to me are three out of the four best tracks on the album: Freya (with a thundering gallop of an intro which gave me my first taste of the Sword, and is great to headbang to), Winter's Wolves (heavier still than Freya), and The Horned Godess, which is slower and manages to sound heavier than Winter's Wolves, more reminiscent of sludge or stoner metal.

Iron Swan is a good track (like everything on here), but it doesn't seem particularly special next to the awesomeness of Lament for the Aurochs, which still seems like their best individual song still; I have yet to hear anyone do a better song than Aurochs, which starts fast, slows way down, and rumbles into the sub-basement. March of the Lohr and Ebethron both provide a good rounding out of the album.

If you're looking for specific tracks: Freya, Winter's Wolves, The Horned Goddess, and Lament for the Aurochs are easily the best songs on an awesome album. But if you can, get the whole thing.

Biography

Formed: 2003 in Austin, TX

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Not to be confused with the Canadian heavy metal band from the late '80s, named simply Sword, the Sword are a retro-metal four-piece hailing from — of all places — the singer/songwriter oasis of Austin, TX. First conceived in 2003, the Sword really hit their stride about a year later, when founding vocalist and guitarist J.D. Cronise joined forces with guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie, and drummer Trivett Wingo, and made a much raved-over appearance at Austin's famed SXSW festival....
