Album Review

Edward McGee turned in mostly above-average performances on their first post-Lenny Williams release, but it was the beginning of the end for the group. With funk losing its foothold among R&B audiences, they couldn't keep it together. Hearing this on compact disc (and it's not one of Columbia's better mastering jobs) reveals that McGee was an energetic, exuberant vocalist who held his own on uptempo tunes like "You Ought To Be Havin' Fun" and the title song, but lacked Williams' range or tonal quality on ballads. The group always had a weakness for ponderous message cuts, and "Can't Stand To See The Slaughter" and "While We Went To The Moon" were well-intentioned but clumsy tracks. This was almost The Tower of Power's swan song.

Forget Eddie

Most TOP fans are use to the revolving door when it came to Lead Singers. There have been numerous band member changes over the years, but even when the band was stable for a while, it seemed liked they had a new singer each month. Most of the singers were good, some very good, one or two great. The material on this album isn't half bad, but the vocals are terrible. If you want hear fingernails on a chalk board, listen to this singer. I don't know what Emilio and the Boys were thinking when they hired this guy. I've seen TOP live many times. I saw them with this singer, and it was the only time I saw TOP fans leave the show before it was over. He was that bad. Not a bad album if you can find a way to remove the vocal track. Long live Lenny, Hubert, Tom, and others who could actually sing.

Eddie's an Egotistical Jerk

The only tracks worth listening to on this album are "Ain't Nothin'" and "You Ought to Be Having Fun." I was in a horn band with McGee in the late '80s early '90s and he was a drag. A few members of my group went to see Tower and they mentioned that Eddie was in our group. The band said, "good luck." This album almost did kill Tower.

Must Have For TOP Fans

Definitely not on a par with Back to Oakland or the all time best Urban Renewal, and certainly a let down from long standing lead singer Lenny Williams, this is, nonetheless, if not their best effort, an album that any self-respecting TOP fan must have in his or her collection. Yes, it's a little watered down, and yes, it's often trite and off the mark...but it's TOP. Therefore, you must own it.

The renowned horn-driven funk outfit Tower of Power has been issuing albums and touring the world steadily since the early '70s, in addition to backing up countless other musicians. The group's leader since the beginning has always been tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo, who was born in Detroit, but opted to pursue his musical dreams in Oakland, CA. It was in Oakland that Castillo put together a group called the Motowns, which as its name suggested, specialized in '60s-era soul. Castillo teamed up...
