iTunes Review

Ain't That Good News is split between an up-tempo first half that shows the many ways Sam Cooke could adapt R&B styles, and a second set of orchestration-drenched tracks. Both give the great one plenty of room to maneuver, delivering one intensely subtle, affecting performance after another. But one cut stands above the rest, both on this album (Cooke's last before his death in late 1964) and in the singer's catalog. "A Change is Gonna Come" was Cooke's response to Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" and the civil-rights movement that had riveted America over the previous few years. The song, of course, has often been recorded since, but the original is saturated with a pain and puzzlement that no one else has quite touched. This would be an excellent Sam Cooke recording without this remarkable song. With it, this album is essential.

Customer Reviews

I grew up listening to him

My dad always play his music in the car when i was little. I knew alot of his songs at a young 5 years old age. Its great music;its ashame what music is all about today.

Pure and true!

You have to focus on the voice, lyrics and phrasing in Cooke's songs. I can't fault him for some of the cheezy arrangements (given that that is how things worked then) that can weaken some of his work. Like Aretha Franklin, John Lennon, Roy Orbison, and others worthy, Cooke is timeless because he is in the music itself. After all, he wrote many of his hits. There aren't enough Sam Cooke's around.

Pure Soul

This is truly Sam's essence of soul trapped in this time capsule. His music is timeless.

Sam Cooke was the most important soul singer in history — he was also the inventor of soul music, and its most popular and beloved performer in both the black and white communities. Yet, those business interests didn't prevent him from being engaged...
