Great song
For those upset that it was pre-recorded and "faked" during the ceremony, be aware that we were expecting high winds that morning here in D.C., and it was bitterly cold. They were concerned that the cold would affect the instruments and the tuning, and that the winds would affect the microphones, so they pre-recorded it. It was actually performed, of course, but what we heard was the pre-recorded version. But so what? It was a wise decision. This isn't as uncommon as people seem to think.
John Williams Producer
I'm the Producer of the John Williams Clarinet Concerto with Williams Conducting. In the Air and Simple Gifts it was prerecorded 2 days earlier. At the actual event they were not playing a single note as the Piano had been modified for the hammers to NOT hit the strings when pressed, and the strings and bows were "soaped" so as not to sound. Personally I would have liked to have seen a live performance from inside another venue and just broadcast that live.
Air and Simple Gifts
This composition will take its place among the greatest contributions to American classical music. It was my favorite part of the inauguration. "Air and Simple Gifts" is truly classic in every sense of the word. The delicate and enduring melody of the timeless Shaker Hymn was masterfully arranged to allow charming and engaging interplay between the four instruments. The piece is exquisite and it was beautifully performed. I am glad the composer and the musicians had the great good sense to pre-record the performance of this gift to the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States so that we could enjoy it in its full glory as a most fitting tribute to the auspicious occasion for which it was rendered. Thank you, iTunes, for making it available for purchase on your site. gwg
