"The Voice of Egypt"
'Umm Kalthoum is often called "the Voice of Egypt," and one of the greatest singers the world has ever known. I'm pleased as an American fan of Arab music to see this album on iTunes, but it is but a small sample of the extraordinary work of this artist whose voice connotes Egypt to millions. iTunes should load all of her song catalogue! Buy this album and learn to listen to a musical tradition that enthralls the entire Middle East.
The Lady
Oum Kalthoum: Her father appreciated her voice so, he allowed her to pose as a boy and take training as a meuzzin and lead call to prayer. She was expelled when it was found that she was a girl. As an adult she held concerts in Cairo, that werer broadcast on the radio. During these concerts, the population of Cairo was so enthralled that the city would stop. At her funeral, mourners struck by grief, rioted and many were killed. In my book, she has never sung a wrong note. I am so glad to see her represented on iTunes.
