Customer Reviews
A case of when the whole is less than the sum of its parts...
I pre-ordered this CD the day I received an email from Alfa Matrix announcing the details of this tribute album. My thinking was that this is a great label carrying some great bands, with the concept of covering one the THE great bands through a tribute to Depeche Mode. While there are already TONS of DM tributes out there, and most of them are epic fails, I figured this one would be one of the better ones. After listening to the tribute a couple of times, though, I realize that I cannot sum it up any better than the previous reviewer (crichton007). I agree with everything s/he wrote. The only thing I can add is that perhaps I went in with preconceived notions of what this tribute would sound like, which was the "softer" and more melodic side of the Alfa Matrix bands covering DM, to reflect the introspective melody behind the classic DM songs. This tribute is more a collection of much harder-edged and ultimately far less melodic versions of the songs, and I agree with the previous reviewer that the "constipated Satan" style of vocals just didn't quite do it for me personally. Maybe it's like mixing peanut butter with oranges (or insert your own strange combination here) -- it's two things you like, but mixing them together just doesn't work as well as you may have initially hoped. In this case, great + great = mediocre.
Not So Good
Considering the label and the pedigree of those involved I expected better. The music is mostly adequate (which is far better than most Depeche Mode tributes) and considering that this is a 2 disc set I find it impressive that only 2 songs were repeated. What ruins most of these covers are the vocals. At times that can barely be heard over the music. In the case of the male vocals most of them sound like a constipated Satan straining to relieve himself while using a vocal distortion. For most of the female vocals it sound like they got Luna Lovegood to speak them as if they were lines from Harry Potter. Despite this there are some good tracks here like Stripped by Mesmer's Eyes, Any Second Now by Dunkelwerk, Precious by Regenerator, Get The Balance Right by 32Crash and Black Celebration by Laether Strip. All in all I can't really recommend this album as a whole but there are some standout tracks. This could have also been hlped by some more of the mainstream tracks from DM and fewer of the deep cuts.
More of an insult than a tribute
Can not find a single track I would listen to more than once, and once is more than enough. This is an insult, not a tribute to DM.
