Deas Vail - finally, Arkansas music is doing something!
I'm not bashing Arkansas, because I've lived here all my life and enjoy playing the old Paul Reed as much as anyone...yet, fellow residents, you can't deny that we have a certain reputation as going around barefoot and pregnant. I've had a lot of exposure to the local music scene...but unfortunately, besides a few notable exceptions (Starroy, Invision, Deas Vail) most of it's pretty sorry stuff. Deas Vail, coming from the west-northwest part of the state (even from ATU, which admits any student who made a 15 or more on their ACT...ouch!) has transcended not only the region, the school, the stereotype, but the entire genre. Fans compare them to Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, and Mae, but honestly they aren't that similar. And that's a good thing...proves that they have some real originality. And real originality is what makes Deas Vail stand out. Much Christian music today (whether straight-up rock or alternative) gets into the same tired groove. Everybody tries to match Switchfoot and Mae and Relient K and ends up with an identical tone too cheerful to be realistic. Deas Vail puts empathy and actual life into their lyrics and music. Instead of cliched and trite stanzas and Jesus-love-songs, the lyrics require at least a little thought to get out the meaning. I've spent way too much time on this review. I hardly read reviews myself before purchasing. But I felt that this album was one that definitely required a write-up. Kudos and cheers to Deas Vail. Keep rocking and make a good name for your buddies in Arkansas!
Virtuous and Beautiful
Don't You Just Love It When something refreshing in music comes along? Pure, i believe, is the best way to describe this album. Its beautifully crafted to make you feel like you are in the most beautiful, serene place on earth. Nothing in this album seems to be unwarrented. Slow melody dominates, and is backed by clean vocals that are unique, especially coming from a man. Poetic, beautiful indie rock that makes itself prevalent and beyond in today's ever-degrading music standards, Deas Vail exceeds the standards with "All the Houses Look The Same", a definate buy.
A Rare Find
This work is simply beautiful. I would honestly rate very few bands with 5 stars, but Deas Vail fits the bill. Among the top songs are Follow Sound, Shadows and City Lights, and For Miles to Come. The sound is light, airy, and puts a smile on your face. Great reflective music to listen to or even run to. I am always impressed when a band breaks the electric guitar quagmire of emo rock music. Beautiful music, excellent sound.
