Album Review
James Horner's score for Clear and Present Danger, the third film based on Tom Clancy's novels about CIA agent Jack Ryan, continues in the sweeping tradition of his music for Patriot Games. Pieces like the main theme, "The Ambush," "Deleting the Evidence," and "Truth Needs a Soldier/End Title" blend anthemic, patriotic elements with the tense musical cues expected from an action movie soundtrack; though it's too predictable at times, Horner's score is more than appropriate for the flag-waving, political thriller it supports.
Customer Reviews
Nice work! Solid Theme!!!
First off, I'm a huge fan of James Horner and I've been quite disappointed with most of Horner’s recent scores (Troy, New World) due to lack of originality. This album is a great turnaround. I love it!
Finally, another Horner Masterpiece
I've liked a lot of Horner's works in the past, such as Braveheart, Apollo 13, Titanic, Aliens. However, like many his style and repitition has gotten old. This score, however, is different. The themes here are amazing and it all sounds fresh, with the exception of Give Me the Hammer and I'll Nail 'Em down (which contains a seriously blatant quote of Braveheart's freedom theme). This new score really gives me hope that Horner has come out of his repititious streak and is able to come up with fresh masterpieces, leaving me very excited for Apocalypto.
Respectable...
This is a pathetic remake. Pointless & Worthless. The score is probably Horner's most serious, but it sounds as if he's trying to create a new style. Finally realizing that bagpipes and flutes can only carry so many films along, but what he's done here is mildly impressive. A little too reminiscent of Shore and Thomas Newman's work. The score follows a repeition with underlying booms of drums and brass that gets old quick. The subtlety works on this one -- which is a rare "pro" for me. Overall, this isn't exactly a great soundtrack, but it's better than 3 star material. 4 for effort. Buy it.
