Album Review
For as big a hit as it was, "You're Beautiful" wasn't necessarily representative of what kind of a singer/songwriter James Blunt is. It wasn't necessarily inaccurate, but it was misleading, suggesting that all this tremulously tuneful singer/songwriter wants to do is be sensitive — that he aimed himself squarely at the middle of the road, crafting gentle music for housewives. That's not quite the case, as his 2007 sophomore effort, All the Lost Souls, makes plain. Surely, Blunt is wholly mainstream, a slicker, spirited variation on David Gray's elegantly upscale folk-pop, but he's not crassly commercial, deciding to disregard the path toward stultifying adult contemporary — a path that "You're Beautiful" certainly pointed toward — but he's also choosing to not write happy, harmless pop like Daniel Powter, still dwelling on moody, introspective midtempos. In other words, he still adheres to the Gray template the second time around, but he opens things up slightly with some spacy textures reminiscent of Coldplay and a heavy dose of classic popcraft, learned equally from Elton John, David Bowie, and Paul McCartney. Oddly, the sum total of these influences turns Blunt into the heir to that forgotten strain of wimpy, wispy songwriter-driven British pop of the '70s embodied by such once-stars as Al Stewart, Leo Sayer, and Gilbert O'Sullivan. The ghost of Gilbert echoes throughout "One of the Brightest Stars," and while this allusion is quite likely inadvertent, it also doesn't seem to be a coincidence that the opening song (and first single) on All the Lost Souls is a song that celebrates "1973," because much of this album feels like it could have been recorded and released during that mid-'70s heyday of sensitive pop. The main difference is not the clean, modern production with its slight digital flourishes — things that push the rhythms forward on "Give Me Some Love," one of the livelier moments here — but that Blunt isn't some quivering bedsit bard; he's the babe who enthusiastically shed his clothes in the "You're Beautiful" video, somebody whose confidence infuses his brokenhearted laments and makes them feel not quite so melancholy. This makes All the Lost Souls soothing, not haunting, and it also removes many of the quirks that distinguished '70s albums by McCartney, O'Sullivan, Sayer, and Elton, so this won't quite seduce that kind of pop fan (although this may hold more interest for them than they might initially think), nor will it win over anybody who can't quite get past the garbled, strangled soul affections of his voice, which remains his greatest liability — but it will seduce anybody already won over by his 2005 debut, Back to Bedlam, since it's a tighter, more assured record than that. But chances are, they were seduced by Blunt already. [An import version was also released.]

Large Improvement
James Blunt achieved worldwide success with his smash #1 hit, You're Beautiful. The hype could not have been higher for his debut album, Back to Bedlam. Sadly, the album was a disapointment. Listeners tried to grasp some other track that captured the magic of You're Beautiful, but to no avail. Blunt recently released his first single, 1973. 1973 is another powerful ballad with a catchy chorus, and Blunt's voice at it's best. After hearing this track you had to wonder if All The Lost Souls sould follow the path of Back to Bedlam. Would you have to reach to find another worthy single? Would Blunt branch out as an artist? The answer is yes. All The Lost Souls starts out a little too slowly after 1973. One of The Brightest Stars (3/5 Stars) and I'll Take Everything (3/5 Stars) are both too slowed down and dragged out, and do not belong at the beginning of an album. After that it really starts to pick up. Same Mistake (4/5 Stars) is a very soothing rythmic ballad that is critical to balancing out the upcoming tracks. Carry You Home (5/5 Stars) and Give Me Some Love (5/5 Stars) are both wonderful up-tempo songs that really get you going. The album staggers a little bit with I Really Want You (3/5 Stars). The chorus does not succeed and the lyrics are nothing special. All The Lost Souls closes nicely with 3 solid tracks in a row. Shine On is a moving ballad about flourishing in life. Annie (5/5 Stars) is a really special track. It tells a powerful story, yet manages to succeed as an up-tempo track. I Can't Hear The Music (4/5 Stars) is a solid all-around track, but this is partially due to the excellent mood Annie has set for it. All The Lost Souls really shows how James Blunt has rounded out his ability. There are very good ballads, upbeat songs, and definte hits. Look for Blunt to continue his growth as an artist as time moves on. Top 5 Songs: 1)Annie 2)1973 3)Give Me Some Love 4)Carry You Home 5)Shine On
Shine On James Blunt!
I was a bit skeptical when I heard that James Blunt was releasing a new CD so soon after Back To Bedlam but this CD has proved to be even better than its predecessor. This CD is a rare compilation of songs. Each song has its each individual "soul" to it (there are no lost souls on this album.) It is a wonderful sophomore album. It proves that Sir Blunt will only get better with time.
Wow. James has done it again
James Blunt in many ways is the iconic Bob Dylan of the current generation. His songs are beautiful, melodic and near perfect. One of his best songs on the new album is "One of the Brightest Stars," which sings the song of rememberance. Very well done. Having listened to the album I cannot really find a weak song, or weak point, as there might've been a few on his last effort. James has matured as a musician and his skill and talent show better then ever on All the Lost Souls.
