A Subtle Glimpse into "Ash Wednesday"
I had never heard of Elvis Perkins up until about a month ago, when I stumbled upon a full page photograph of him accompanied by one of the most compelling articles I've ever read about an artist. Here was this figure: face hidden and looking down, hand run through his hair, captured by the photographer as an image of uninterruptible pensiveness. After reading the article behind Elvis's music (to say his past is heartbreaking is a vague generalization) I immediately sought out his music. Similarly to the first image I saw of him, Elvis Perkins’ music is all about contemplation. My immediate favorite was the second track, “The Dumps”, a bittersweet and optimistic look at the future from a dark past with the hope of “starting the living again” and making all the moves to do so. “All the Night Without Love” provides all the ambiance of an acoustic night; the only thing you really need to supply for yourself is the coffee and candlelight. These three songs fly by and achieve the terrible purpose of an EP—to make its listener long for more. A remarkable voice and thoughtful lyrics can be found here, a strong (but limited) glance into what we can expect from his full-length debut, due out at the end of February. 1/18/2007

This is a nice little tease but what until you hear the entire record...it is stunning. Better still, as another reviewer mentioned - see Elivs Perkins in Dearland (the name of his full band) live someday. They are awesome! Upright Bass, Harmonium, Electric and Acoustic guitar, drums, and little keys...just lovely music by some lovely folks.
worth the three bucks
I saw these guys open for My Morning Jacket and they were pretty sweet. Funny thing is that most of there songs that night open with the tune of "you are my sunshine, my only sunshine."
