iTunes Review

The Bangles began their career as a spunky garage band playing ‘60s-inspired originals and covers that highlighted their harmonies and jangly guitars and made them most popular among the southern California’s early-80s Paisley Underground. With their signing to Columbia Records and association with producer David Kahne, the band began a polishing process that would make them a successful radio-friendly ‘80s pop group. Their debut album, All Over the Place, is a delectable gem from the era, featuring several well-chosen covers (‘60s pop group The Merry-Go-Round’s “Live,” the Soft Boys’ Kimberley Rew’s “Going Down to Liverpool”) and stellar originals (“Hero Takes a Fall,” “James,” “Dover Beach”) that made them one of the most refreshing groups of the era. There isn’t an ounce of fat on this tight 11-track collection. While their instrumental chops are well-presented, it’s the group’s elaborate and supportive harmonies that raise the bar. From the swooping call and responses of “All About You” and “Tell Me,” “to the orchestrated finale “More Than Meets the Eye,” this was a true group working at their prime.

Their Best - Forget The Rest!

by C_Man1

Pure rock and roll and pure harmonies - no keyboard touches, no writing songs w/ Prince - this is The Bangles before everyone else changed them. Get this album and forget the rest of their albums - when you listen to this album and then their other albums, you'll see what I mean - another band that got ruined by the music industry.

even years after its release and the band's breakup this album is a great example of what a pop/rock band should sound like. Each track fits well among the others and the overall feel of the album is seamless. Wish I had seen them during this period. The quintessential Girl Rock Band.

Bangles' Best

by Larry "Bud" Melman

"All Over the Place" is the Bangles best album. It is different from subsequent releases. Future albums were polished 80's pop. This is their first full album and it is a 60's-style rock album with great hooks and soaring harmonies. The songs, sound & production give the record a garage band 60's vibe. Best of all, the Bangles sound like a band! On All Over the Place, the Bangles are fun, smart, hip and have a great sense of style.

All Over the Place merits a spot in any collection. It stands as an album instead of a collection of songs. It stands the test of time and there isn't a weak track on it. "Dover Beach" is a highlight on an album full of great tracks.

Originally know as Colours, the Supersonic Bangs, and the Bangs, the Bangles sprang from L.A.'s paisley underground scene in 1981.
