Album Review
The classic pairing of Buddy Guy and Junior Wells has been captured many times on vinyl, cassette, and disc over the years, but rarely with such intimacy and subtle, restrained energy as on this wonderful collection. Buddy Guy plays mostly 12 string guitar, and Junior laces his signature lines through the songs, engaging Guy in the kind of musical dialogue that only old friends can have. This is acoustic street-corner blues at its best, performed with incredible expressiveness, ease, and joy. One gets the feeling these two are just sitting down for a friendly jam session on a Saturday afternoon, and when things get loose, their laughter flows almost as freely as the music. Guy really shines on some of these tracks, his guitar lines fast, smooth, percussive, and seemingly effortless. Wells, always tasteful, plays counterpoint to Guy in the classic style and sings with honesty and conviction. What resulted is some absolutely fantastic music.
Customer Reviews
Without a doubt one of the greatest albums
If you leave genius alone--away from the audience, away from gimicks, this is what you get. Great blues and a delight in soul
A magnificent Blues Album
I first heard this album in a record store in New Orleans and I had to buy it there and then. What a great decision. This live album, recorded in Paris, is a classic. If you need only one acoustic blues album this is it. Each song is engaging and the rapport between Wells and Guy is superb. You cannot get bored with this album, it lasts and lasts. Enjoy.
Classic, minimalist acoustic blues...
I just downloaded this today and was blown away. I expected to like it, but not as much as I did. It is minimalist in the best sense of the word, but polished, not raw. Having lived in Chicago in the late 70's and early 80's (when so much of the rest of the music scene was junk) I gained an appreciation for real blues music, both on the radio and some of the night spots. Don't get me wrong, I think Buddy's electric music is great, but the counterpoint between Buddy and Junior here, with just the two instruments and the microphones - and of course the two voices - is priceless. If only I could play and sing like this...
