iTunes Review

For Weezer fans, hearing its main man and songwriter working through ideas in his home studio, flexing his experimental nature to better understand his own creative process, is both a fascinating and sometimes frustrating experience. After all, the creative process is filled with trial and error and while an early version of “Buddy Holly” shows just how well-formed his ideas sometimes come to him, some of the songs feel fragmentary or like ideas that aren’t likely to go much further (the 45 seconds of “Who You Callin’ Bitch?” or the 35 seconds of taped nonsense on the non-song “I Wish You Had An Axe Guitar”). But this is also often where the fun resides. “Wanda (You’re My Only Love)” uses some cheap sounding keyboards to support its sublime melody, while the less-than-a-minute “Dude We’re Finally Landing” features charming vocal harmonies that lack nothing despite the song’s incompleteness. “Superfriend” and “I Was Made for You” don’t need grander productions, since the drums and guitars are sufficient to support Cuomo’s aching vocals and counterpoint effects.

Rivers Cuomo is an absolute genius! Not one song on this album isn't worth listening to over and over and over again and again and again. I have to praise the version of "Buddy Holly" on this album also. It is incredible! And lastly, I loooooveee the grunge rivers sound in "The World We Love So Much". Brilliant!!

Stick with Weezer

I would not have written this review, but I heard this album and I had to say something. I like Weezer, but this album is horrendous. I can't believe this guy was once a music major at Harvard; he should have failed, and in light of his subsequent success with Weezer, dropping out was probably a wise move. Whether or not this can formally be described as such, when did the term 'Indie' come to mean some weak voiced geek singing over weak, out-of-tune, half-baked music? Not even one of these songs is anything to which I would listen more than once, assuming I could actually summon the aural stamina to maintain through to it's conclusion the first time. Eeew! Maybe there's something in the lyrics, but I can't get past the self-indulgent noise. These 'songs' should have stayed at home
