iTunes Review
The Derek Trucks Band plays with a confidence that stems from years of roadwork and lives steeped in blues-rock history. On their sixth album, 2009's Already Free, the band kicks into Bob Dylan's "Down In the Flood" with a tough, southern-fried take that delivers an extra funk Dylan never would dare attempt. Trucks' wife Susan Tedeschi adds extra cheek to "Back Where I Started" and the band easily flows from R&B, blues to Middle Eastern vibes and jazz. Whether the band is practicing a soulful restraint for "Maybe This Time," with Doyle Bramhall II on guest vocals, exploring its gospel roots with "Sweet Inspiration," twisting up the urban blues of "Don't Miss Me," or turning up the guitar distortion for the crushing weight of "Get What You Deserve," the results are genuine and heartfelt, anchored in the greatest of Southern Rock traditions, hailing back from the field recordings of the ancient blues to the full-throttle band attack instituted by the Allman Brothers Band back in the ‘70s.

The Finest Craftsmanship of True Artists
Hundreds of years ago, owing to geographical and resource constraints, Japanese carpenters developed the ability to construct houses that could withstand earthquakes, such that, today, Japanese carpenters are among the finest in the world. Their craft is so advanced, they are able to construct complex joinery with a dizzying array of three-dimensional planes and surfaces designed to hold joints together without the benefit of glue or nails. So precise is this joinery, that you cannot slip the finest piece of paper between the mating surfaces of the wood. And the joints last as long as the wood lasts. As I've listened to this album over the past couple of days, the image of Japanese carpentry keeps asserting itself in my mind. Songs that would be mundane in anyone else's hands are transformed into true works of art in the ample hands of Derek Trucks and his compatriots. The attention to detail is astounding. The opening riffs of "Our Love" or "Down Don't Bother Me," for example, are extremely precise in both tone and rhythm. The east-indian thread that connects the back-country ode of "Back Where I Started" to the romping R&B waltz of "I Know" is both inventive and done to just the right degree. And, like find Japanese carpentry, this album is built to last. You'll be listening to this album, and discovering new treats with every listen, for years to come. I agree with Thom Jurek's AMG review. This album has a feel and a vibe, with an impressive depth of heart and soul, that's been missing from most recorded music over the past 30 years. It's an outstanding achievement by one of the most talented and capable bands in the music industry today.
The Best!!
As a huge DTB fan, I have been looking forward to this album since I heard that it was being made. In no way does this album disappoint. Every single track is flat out amazing. The band hits every single genre that they have ever explored to absolute perfection. From indian ragas, to down home blues, to soulful gospel everything blends together into a beautiful sound that is now The Derek Trucks Band. Incredible guest musicians make this truly one of the best albums of this generation, and a MUST have!!
Good listen
This is the same lineup that created Songlines, and the continuity shines through in Already Free. The songs are upbeat and full of the skilled instrumental stylings that defines DTB. Whether you have it on for a road trip soundtrack or just an evening at home, Already Free will have you smiling from start to finish.
