iTunes Review

Former Pseudosix frontman Tim Perry enlivens the Portland, Oregon scene with his latest project, AgesandAges. The new group plays an earnest and enthusiastic folk-pop that takes the rollicking ease of the Beatles’ “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” and throws in touches of freaky-folk’s Devendra Banhart and the psychedelic sprawls of the Polyphonic Spree. The band’s ensemble vocals create a Bible Camp for free spirits, with everyone singing in jubilation. It leads to a sly reggae on the title track and an alluring call-and-response on the album highlight, “So So Freely.” “No Nostalgia” has traces of The Rolling Stones’ “Child of the Moon” in its trippy cadences. The child-like warble of “Navy Parade” shadows the emotive touches of indie legend Daniel Johnston’s fragile work. “Tap On Your Windowpane” is a demented waltz that allows the many multi-instrumentalists in the band to let loose. This is highly idiosyncratic music, a sign of the adventurous musical paths chosen by those who cherish their individual musical powers and wish to encourage others to pursue their inner visions.

Recruiting a crew of multi-instrumentalists that included former Pseudosix side player Kate O’Brien-Clarke as well as John McDonald, Graham Mackenzie, Daniel Hunt, Rob Oberdorfer, and Lisa Stringfield,...
