Album Review

The title of Always & Forever: The Classics implies that this is a collection of Luther Vandross' greatest hits of the mid- to late-'90s. That's not the case. The Classics truly means classics, with each one of the featured songs (with an exception or two) ranking as a true pop classic. Since Vandross is an excellent, peerless contemporary R&B vocalist, this is an excellent opportunity for him to shine, and he does, particularly on "A House Is Not a Home," "Anyone Who Had a Heart," "Going Out of My Head" and "I (Who Have Nothing)." Occasionally, the production is a little too polished or smooth, but Vandross shines throughout the entire album, making it another treasure in his catalog.

Always & Forever

No one like him. One of the few artists who's cover songs run rings around the original. what a talent, what a mind to completely transform a song like he (and Nat Adderly Jr) does-"I Who Have Nothing," "Superstar" The originals were great, but Luther makes them better. This is a great collection to have. If you attended any of Luther's concerts in the 80's & early 90's, and remember the "Broadway Productions" he use to render, you'll love the memories this album provides.

Reconfiguration Of His Covers Of Classics

This cd came out around the time Luther left Sony for Virgin, Sony decided to make a bit of money with their holdings releasing this rather fine collection of Luther's covers. Some of these covers were well-known and some were relegated to album cuts, all that is disregarded as this set pulls together these tracks for a strong album. Not one song is a mis-step or throw-away and the sequencing is perfect, the mastering impeccable and the songs are not edited. Luther is awash in amazing production as he delivers is trademark balladry.
