Album Review

Elvis recorded quite a bit of gospel over the course of his career, and this two-CD, 55-song set has the bulk of it. Most of this is drawn from his three gospel LPs (His Hand in Mine, 1960; How Great Thou Art, 1967; He Touched Me, 1972), as well as a 1957 EP. Presley was undoubtedly heavily influenced by gospel (at times he indicated regret at not having chosen to become a gospel singer), and this material has played pretty well with critics. Elvis sings with skill and reasonable commitment, and the backing musicians include such Elvis/Nashville standbys as Scotty Moore, Hank Garland, Floyd Cramer, Charlie McCoy, Pete Drake, the Jordanaires, and James Burton. At the same time, let's have a reality check here. Rock- and pop-oriented fans are going to find this two-and-a-half-hour set tough going, unless they have a taste for spirituals as well. Things get a little more accessible when the tempos brighten, but often it's on the sedate side. For both collectors and listeners, highlights of the collection are five previously unreleased tracks from 1972. Recorded with only Charlie Hodges on piano and J.D. Sumner & the Stamps on backing vocals, they present Presley's gospel at its sparsest and most spontaneous.

At the true heart of Elvis!

Elvis was so much deeper in heart than his love songs, hit tunes and movies. His heart was with gospel music and the message of God's love. Yes, he made some poor choices but according to those who really were in the know, Elvis' heart remained close to God. This album is a complete set of his gospel recording but I prefer Elvis' Ultimate Gospel Album as it offers a more compact sampling of Elvis' gospel recordings - and many are the more upbeat tempo songs. Elvis sings from the depths of his heart and that's easy to hear. And, many people will not know that he demanded to record this album as his record label did not want to do it. Check out Elvis' Ultimate Gospel!

A Deeper Sound

No glitz or glamor here, no hips or leg, what you will find here is a deep rich voice that truly is a gift from God. The songs are from deep in the soul and will touch your mind and spirt in your walk to heaven. This is pure deep rich gospel music from the heart and expressed in a way that few have ever been able to express. When you close your eyes you not only feel the music, you feel the very spirit of God. The voice of this pop icon will draw you near to God and stir the very flames of your spirit. This is truly Elvis at his best.

Absolutely beautiful! His voice and his natural feeling for the music, especially the old spirituals, is unsurpassed!

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s

Elvis Presley may be the single most important figure in American 20th century popular music. Not necessarily the best, and certainly not the most consistent. But no one could argue with the fact that he was the musician most responsible for popularizing rock & roll on an international level. Viewed in cold sales figures, his impact was phenomenal. Dozens upon dozens of international smashes from the mid-'50s to the mid-'70s,...
