A great Eno work
I waited with baited breath for this record to arrive at the university record store in 1982. Expecting a masterpiece like 'Another Green World' I was a little disappointed after putting it on the turntable. Instead of discreet songs the record sounded like murmuring aural wallpaper. I filed the record away but whenever I put it on again it sounded as strange and fresh as the first time. It still does and grew into my favorite Eno ambient record.
People say this is 'dark ambient'. It's like hiking along in an old forest in the fog with shapes emerging and disappearing, mysterious, but not menacing. This 28 year recording sounds as new as it did in 1982. I'm sure it will sound just as fresh 20 years from now.
Unusual Worlds
RECOMMENDED TRACKS: Lizard Point, Lantern Marsh, Shadow
Ambient 4/On Land is my favorite album of all time. It is Brian Eno's fourth and last CD in his Ambient series (a project that first coined the term 'ambient' and basically started his electronic work). It is nothing like the other three before it, and in fact stands out from all the albums he's ever done. (Aside from, perhaps, the Shutov Assembly, and Apollo). It is the darkest ambient album he's ever fabricated, and could be considered one of the first pioneer records of dark ambient ever to be made. Every piece is different, all of them incredible. Each one takes me to a different world, a different place on land.
Lizard Point - The first piece is one of my favorite ambient tracks ever. It sounds like a desert, mystical yet dangerous at night. Prowlers crawl around the mountains, hiding in the vast rocks that scatter and stack across the valleys. Lizard Point takes me on a dark journey, a deadly walk down a rocky mountain at midnight. However, the track can take you to all kinds of places, from the echoes of a deep, cold cave to the halls of an ancient castle. A masterpiece nonetheless.
The Lost Day - The second track is the longest, yet also one of the least expanding. It is a dead world, an apocalyptic environment. I'm walking through an abandoned city; a quiet, empty ghost town showing the scars of war. It could be many other things as well… a silent forest or murky swamp.
Shadow - Total ambience, no music. 'Ambience' meaning sounds, not 'ambient' music. Big difference. Whatever this track is, it is a dangerous place. There's some kind of creature lurking nearby. This is actually one of the most interesting pieces on the album. He has never made a more unusual track, in my opinion. It's creepy. And genius.
Lantern Marsh - Another one of my favorite ambient pieces. This feels just as its name implies - it is a swampy forest filled with lanterns. These lanterns hang from the trees above, or perhaps they stand beside long bridges I'm crossing over the water. This track is pure magic to my ears. It paints a moonlit world filled with curious life.
Dunwich Beach, Autumn, 1960 - A lengthy piece that constructs a vision of the ocean. Many people wouldn't feel this track the way I do, but it takes me into an oceanic atmosphere that reminds me of places I've visited once before - Shii Shii Beach, a misty place on Indian Reservation along the Olympic Peninsula. Or the Oregon Coast. Good stuff, and a very subtle ending to the album.
Dark and Soothing
This one is filled to the gills with cool atmosphere. The whole album feels like a journey through lands unknown. Sometimes strange and almost menacing, this work crafts unique dreamscape visuals out of sound. The music is challenging and wonderful. Definitely good for nighttime.
