Album Review

A clean and bright effort that delivers some heavy themes, America Town is a very American-sounding album: drifting from song to song is like driving through the Midwest from town to town, each town offering its own stories, not all of which are happy. Singer/songwriter John Ondrasik tackles topics like suicide on "Easy Tonight" and the desire to belong ("Superman", which became an anthem for post-9/11 Americans one year after the album's release) but still manages to see the silver lining in the areas of family ("Easy Tonight") and idolatry ("Michael Jordan"). The songs are sung in a fragile growl, a little like Eddie Vedder singing a lullaby, and backed with some very straightforward acoustic guitar and piano-led rock. The focus is clearly on the lyrics, which are well written and effectively sung.

Buy the Whole Album

This one of few albums that I can listen to from start to finish. The songs are meaningful, too. Alcoholisim (Bloody Mary), divorce (Love Song), love (Jainy)..... Then one's you can't figure out, but you love them anyway. Definately worth thirteen bucks.

Superman

This is the most amazing song I have ever heard. Even tho its sad, its beautiful and i love the story it tells. <3

Terrific Songs-both music and lyrics

It is rare to find the blend of originality, depth and musical talent evident in this album. The lyrics of these songs are as solid as the melodies. The test of a good lyric is the extent to which it elicits memories or reflections about the self. The test of good music is the extent to which it lingers on in the mind, and you find yourself wanting to hear it again, either by humming it to yourself an hour later or repeating the track instantly. Five for Fighting has the musical genius to be able to deliver on both music and lyrics. Skeptical? Listen closely to Superman and see if your mind can put it away easily.
