iTunes Review

The album cover’s rose of the same name ended up a perennial Dead trademark, but more to the point is how American Beauty’s title sums up its ethos. After capturing its freewheeling impulses on the likes of Anthem of the Sun and Live/Dead, the band reeled it all in for a controlled cohesion that allowed the players to nail down what might be their most gorgeous album. (Its acoustic instrumentation recalls nothing so much as the Band’s then-recent self-titled set.) “Box of Rain” and “Ripple” were philosophical gems whose reassurances went far beyond hippie talk; the latter’s play with blues and gospel iconography put the song at nice odds with the Dead’s outlaw mythos. Elsewhere, there’s praise for a “Sugar Magnolia” who “pays my ticket when I speed,” and the eternal “Truckin’,” a strong bemused glance at the road life and its hazards. The remastered sound reveals one of the most crisply recorded outfits of its era. This edition’s bonus tracks include a passel of live versions, a single edit of “Truckin’” and a tongue-in-cheek radio ad.

The Album Title Say's it All

The Grateful Dead are reconized as pioneers to the genre of Jam Band music and that is truthfully what most people associate the dead with. American Beauty is nothing short of beautiful music. It takes the tone of the occasional country, folk, rock and Jerry's notoriously known bluegrass schemes. American Beauty is one of my favorite dead album because it shows that the dead can write songs that are shorter than Dark Star but just as effective. It's a great album. A must have for anyone interested in the Grateful Dead, but more importantly anyone that loves an acoustic vibe with very clever lyrics.

great vocal harmonies

This album still resonates thirty seven years later. The first four songs are led by four different singers - Phil, Jerry, Bob, and Pigben. This is probably the best studio album ever put out by the Dead. Rootsy, bluegrassy, folksy. In addition, one of the premiere examples of the esoteric and hybrid genre known as "country rock." This is San Francisco psychedelia meets country, a beautiful blend!! Whenever I introduce the Dead to non-deadheads, I always start them with American Beauty and Europe '72. The high harmonies of Phil Lesh, particularly on "Attics of My Life" are notweorthy. Whoa, what I would have given to see the Dead in the early 70s!!

best dead collection

Quite simply this is the best collection for dead fans, has all the favorites. I would reccomend this to any deadhead old or young this album is a must have for the collection

Rock's longest, strangest trip, the Grateful Dead were the psychedelic era's most beloved musical ambassadors as well as its most enduring survivors, spreading their message of peace, love, and mind-expansion across the globe throughout the better part of three decades. The object of adoration for popular music's most fervent and celebrated fan following — the Deadheads, their numbers and devotion legendary in their own right — they were the ultimate cult band, creating a self-styled...
