iTunes Review

Tori Amos is never short of ideas. American Doll Posse centers around the concept that Amos inhabits the mindset of five distinct “dolls” named Santa, Clyde, Isabel, Tori and Pip. Each represents a different part of the female psyche and perceives her environment in slightly different terms. According to Amos’ notes, for example, Santa is sexual, while Isabel is neutral. Following these concepts is made far more difficult by Amos’ obscure symbolism, her bizarre enunciation and the layer of thick production that coats each song in orchestrations and various recording studio tricks. This adventurous modern-day progressive rock makes for involved listening. Amos can deliver the moody piano ballad (“Girl Disappearing,” “Father’s Son”) or the indelible pop song (“Bouncing Off Clouds,” “Secret Spell”) with ease. But it’s the way she paces these efforts that makes the drama so effective. “Fat Slut” lasts less than a minute, but it’s harsh denunciations color the mood of the surrounding tracks. “Programmable Soda” tinkles with a lightness of being that’s immediately shut down by the chords of doom that open “Code Red.” Amos’ constantly shifting tones suggest her only fear is being cornered and becoming predictable. No worries here.

Sorry Tori

I love Tori she's my absolute favorite, but I widdled this album down from 23 tracks to 9. There are some real gems hidden in the bunch (Bouncing Off Clouds, Roosterspur Bridge, Smokey Joe), but the rest are either silly, pretentious or contrived (Teenage Hustling, You Can Bring Your Dog, Digital Ghost) Instead of building the beautiful music that seems to breathe straight from her soul, she produced a few great tracks then muddled them together with a horde of pop rock trash. Tracks like the outright abomination of a song "Programmable Soda" which should never have seen the light of day and the borderline insulting "Posse Bonus" which sounds like she wrote it in the last few moments before shuffling the album off to Itunes. I'm thoroughly dissapointed.

Bloody Brilliant! Thank you, Miss Amos

My, what a long way Tori has come from "Little Earthquakes". This album has everything. There is the classic girl and her piano as well as the experimental artist that emerged around the time of "Choirgirl". All 23 tracks run the gamut from emotional to seemingly silly and Tori's sound on this album is HUGE. Just when you think you've settled into what to expect next, here comes a heavy bass line or intricate percussion background. The work here is layered and lush without losing what Tori is all about. You never lose the piano, or the soaring soprano. "Bouncing Off Clouds" is just gorgeous with a driving beat to it and "Beauty of Speed" and "Roosterspur Bridge" are beautiful ballads with wonderful melodies. Other standout tracks, for me, were "Code Red", "Big Wheel", and "Secret Spell". There isn't enough good things to say and I am sure hat even for new fans, this album has something to offer :)

Listen Carefully

Tori is always Tori! Many of the reviews I read were rather sketchy "I like this one but not that one" this bed is too hard, and this one to soft. There's a lot of talk about expectations. My advice for Tori fans would be give up your expectations, disregaurd the reviews(INCLUDING THIS ONE). Don't set yourself up for dissapointment, this is not a re-release of Boys For Pele, it's not the 90's revisted! It is tori in all of her glory in the here and now. She is not here to lick our wounds and rehash subjects of yesterdays news so we can feel 16 again. NOT GONNA HAPPEN! I'ts not a big stretch from the tori we know and love. GREAT SONGS! GREAT HEART! BUY THE WHOLE ALBUM AND MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND!

Biography

Born: August 22, 1963 in Newton, NC

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) was one of several female singer/songwriters who combined the stark lyrical attack of alternative rock with a distinctly '70s musical approach, creating music that fell between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell. In addition, she revived the singer/songwriter traditions of the '70s while reestablishing the piano as a rock & roll instrument. With her 1992 album Little...
