Accomplished music, easy assignment

Stephen Trask, who might best be known as the composer and lyricist behind the glam-punk musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," tackles a variety of musical genres and satirizes them fairly effectively with his score to "American Dreamz." The album as a whole should be marketed more as a "score" than a "soundtrack," but the high points from the film are here: the hilarious "Dreamz With a Z," the weepy Carrie Underwood mockery in "Mommie Don't Drink Me to Bed Tonight," the Hasidic hip-hop, the Iraqi-accented showtunes. (All of these, it should be noted, are available only if you purchase the entire album.) Listening to the score as a whole, Trask does a fine job setting up musical motifs and using the art of the pastiche to create a work that evokes classic patriotic Americana, the Middle East and modern pop. The downside of this album (and the score, and the film) is that the targets are too easy; they more or less satirize themselves. Still, the music is accomplished, melodic and frequently hilarious, and it's a nice step to see a record label actually release the full score recording of a film. (ITunes should consider releasing a "highlights" version containing all the comedy numbers and performances for those not as interested in the instrumental tracks.)

good movie, not-so-good soundtrack

I saw the movie at a pre-screening two weeks ago. It was a hilarious, laugh out loud satire that delivered on its promise to poke fun at American culture. The soundtrack, however, left much to be desired. Songs were kind of boring, and uneventful, which is a shame because Mandy Moore can SING. My take? See the Movie...Skip the Soundtrack.
