Album Review

John Cougar's first albums were so bereaved of strong material that the lean swagger of American Fool came as a shock. The difference is evident from the opening song, "Hurts So Good," a hard, Stonesy rocker with an irresistibly sleazy hook. Cougar never wrote anything as catchy as this before, nor had his romantic vision of small-town America resonated like it did on "Jack & Diane," a minor and remarkably affecting sketch of dead-end romance. These two songs are the only true keepers on American Fool, but the rest of the record works better than his previous material because his band is tighter than ever before, making his weaker moments convincing. Besides, songs like "Hand to Hold On To" and "China Girl," for all their faults, do indicate that his sense of craft is improving considerably. [Universal's 2005 CD reissue appends a bonus track, "American Fool."]

Great CD

by KISS Fan '96

The CD flows together nicely, there are some neat drum sounds, great guitar and a broad spectrum of subjects. Tracks 1-3 get the airplay but don't stop listening there. Below are some highlights from the lesser known tracks.

Danger List sounds like a guy kind of lost in life.
Thundering Hearts, great chorus. A true feel good song.
Close Enough tells you he's a good man but has his faults, rock and roll being one of them.
Weakest Moments he shows a soft side.

Note: This was the biggest selling album of '82. Ideally it's not just because of tracks 1-3.

Nothing Matters & What if it Did

Listen to his album, Nothing Matters & What if it Did which is before this album. That's the album that made me a fan in 1981 while a student at Indiana University. Loved his music from that point on.

Great album, but for his fans

This is one of the musical greats of our time. This is definitely an album for people who are more familiar with his music, though. If you're just starting to listen to him of just like a couple of songs, take a good listen before you buy this. It's not really a starter album in my opinion.
