iTunes Review
For a sense of Tom Petty’s longevity, consider that the Heartbreakers’ debut LP was released in 1976, a year in which Abba were the best selling act in the world. For over 30 years, Petty has remained remarkably faithful to the course set by “American Girl” and “Breakdown,” songs that still get played on millions of radios every day. The decades changed, the trends shifted, but Petty stayed the same. Even the most ambitious song on here, “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” contains echoes of the Byrds and Bob Dylan, Petty’s two unchanging idols. The only major variation between this 2008 edition of Greatest Hits and the 1993 version is the substitution of the impassioned Stevie Nicks duet “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” for the rather bland Thunder Newman cover “Something In the Air.” For diehard Petty fans, the improved audio quality will be the real draw. The difference is particularly noticeable on the early tracks which once were tinny but now sound full and sharp — in particular, Benmont Tench’s Wurlitzer keyboard on “Breakdown” has never sounded so rich. If you only know “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” or “I Won’t Back Down” from the radio, be prepared for these classic tunes to reveal themselves like newly varnished hot rods.

Don't Come Around Here No More
by FishhawkeI am really happy I down loaded this song. I was looking for some classic Petty and this song delivered. I enjoyed it so much I picked up a couple more tunes for my shuffle. I love to crank it when I walk my dog...

Five stars for the music, but ONE star for the mixing
by 4stringwizardI'm a Tom Petty fan, and I was excited to hear that they had released a re-mastered version of their "Greatest Hits" album. So, I went out and bought the CD. However, I was horrified to find out that their idea of re-mastering was merely turning up the volume of every track until every one was compressed. For those of you who aren't sure what I'm talking about, look up "loudness war" and you'll find out what I mean. But all you really need to know is that the songs don't really sound better than the original album, just louder. In fact, they probably sound worse since the tracks are compressed.
I can see why they did it, so I won't rant and rave about it. After all, since most music these days is released louder, one can listen to this album at the same volume as, say, the latest Nickelback songs. However, I am disappointed that I pretty much wasted money on an item that in all honesty wasn't superior to the original. It's a shame that even this band sacrificed audio quality just for a few extra decibels of sound. Go ahead and buy the album, because the songs are still excellent. Just don't expect them to truly sound better.
