iTunes Review

Johnny Cash’s long, legendary career comes to a close with this final collection produced by Rick Rubin and featuring numerous songs that confront the final showdown. Cash’s career spanned many years when his music was either at odds with the times or was produced in ways that diminished his considerable strengths. But Rubin took fewer chances, focusing on “The Man In Black” and his world-worn voice. By stripping Cash’s music down to its essentials, often little more than an acoustic guitar and voice, Rubin helps Cash make songs like the banjo-stomping “Ain’t No Grave,” Sheryl Crow’s “Redemption Day,” and timeless classics such as ”Satisfied Mind” and “Cool Water” sound like the Final Word. A slight Western sweetening on “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream” adds a burst of color and the bittersweet tone of the Hawaiian melody “Aloha Oe” makes for a fond farewell. Could there be a dry eye in the house after this listen?

JR, thanks

Johnny cash's final showdown with death and the journey beyond is the way I describe this album. While I am not a fan of country, I absolutely adore Johnny Cash and his music. There is just something about hearing JR on his guitar singing and telling a story that you just can't resist. The song "A satisfied mind" will probably sound familiar because it was featured on Kill Bill Vol. 2 soundtrack. A great collection of the final last words, stories, and songs by a man a grave really can't hold. He always live on and his words will ever ring true.

Heavy

It is the most authentic guided tour of mortality you can ever take, short of being in the presence of the dying. A must experience for all humans.

Fabulous Closure for the Man in Black

This is a fabulous closing album for Johnny Cash. His voice sounds strong and emotional. It also features a new original JC song "I Corinthians 15:55". Not one song on here I don't love. RIP Johnny Cash, you live on.

Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare, percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world-weariness of country. Cash's career coincided with the birth of rock &...
