iTunes Review
There’s no denying that this Northern UK quartet capture the icy tones and despondent vibe that made Joy Division such an entrancing entity back at the turn of the ‘80s. In his darkest moments, singer Tom Smith emulates Ian Curtis’ detached existentialism (with a touch of Welshman John Cale) while the group purrs along with a mix of the Division’s glass-hard guitar shards from Unknown Pleasures and the plusher keyboard-infused textures of Closer. “Please love don’t be scared,” Smith sings during “Spiders” recalling the Teardrop Explodes’ Julian Cope doing his finest Jim Morrison homage. All these ripe influences, however, don’t demote the group’s own individual chemistry. While the echoes of rock’s long history can be heard throughout the Editors’ second studio album, there are plenty of strong melodies to make this album more than mere hero worship. The album’s first single and opener, “Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors” comes trouncing forward with a sense of dancefloor urgency. “Well Worn Hand” closes the album with a stately piano ballad. In between, the group sways from bursts of sunlight to foggy, trudging rhythms. They’re drawn to dark moods but in the end have trouble trying to hide their youthful optimism.

Picking Up Right Where They Left Off...
Personally, the track for me on the Back Room was "Open Your Arms", a slower-developing track that builds up to an incredible climax to finish the song - much in the same vein as "Amsterdam" off of Coldplay's record, A Rush of Blood to the Head. The track "Distance" followed, closing out a brilliant debut record from a very promising young band out of the UK. The first single from An End Has A Start, "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors" is also the lead track on the record. An amazing track, complete with a breakdown and build up that almost guarantees that it will be pegged as one of 2007s most anthemic tracks. There is a good balance of up-tempo, mid-tempo, and down-tempo tracks, giving the record a full feeling, much like The Back Room did. "The Racing Rats", "The Weight of the World", "Spiders" "Push Your Head Towrds the Air" are all incredible tracks. Do yourself a favour and check this record out. And if you get the chance to catch them live... it is one of the best shows I have ever been to! ENJOY!
ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!
wow! what can i say. Editors continue to shock me. There old cd (The Back Room) was amazing, of course. But this, AN END HAS A START, blows it out of the water! The screeching guitar licks in "Bones", "The Racing Rats", and "Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors", combined with the calmness (yet still perfect) "Spiders" makes this cd a perfect 10/10. Highlights (in order): 1. Bones (amazing opening riff) 2. The Racing Rats (his voice is magnificent with the amazing guitar work) 3. Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors (Perfect....period) 4. Spiders (Magnificent) 5. An End Has A Start (very well written)
Well worth the wait!
Another fantastic effort from Editors. I particularly love the opener, "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors", and "Spiders." Great production, too! (Wish the iTunes store would tell who produced! I'll google it) ... If you're a fan of Editors, check out Pistol Opera from L.A.; one of their CD's is available on iTunes.
