Brilliant!
Eileen Ivers is properly described as the "Jimi Hendrix of the violin," but her work on this collection exceeds that description--not because she can't shred her bow with fierce playing, but because she can also evoke the gentlest of emotions out of her instrument. Ivers is backed by talented musicians and vocalists (including Tommy McDonald). The arrangements on this album may not please some traditionalists (this recording of Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring takes a decidedly Celtic and commoner tack), but for those who enjoy Celtic music, a band that has fun with its work, and are willing to give it a listen will not be disappointed. We were lucky enough to see Ivers and crew in concert at Notre Dame this week, and if the opportunity presents itself, it's worth taking--without hesitation.
great craic!
I just got back from seeing her in concert playing these tunes with the Cleveland Orchestra. Eileen Ivers and her band rocked Severence Hall! Eileen not only plays her traditional fiddle and electric fiddle with a delicate touch but with blazing passion. Tommy McDonnell is hilarious, he's such a hambone! :D But all in all it was a rollicking Christmas concert playing most of the tunes from this CD with the Cleveland Orchestra. It was just so neat to see her and her band steal the spotlight from such a world famous orchestra, and then to see all the Cleveland Irish in attendence dancing in the aisles and clapping and stomping as loud as they could to their infectous tunes. (In Severence Hall no less!!) ^_^ If you can see her in concert do yourself a favor and go!! Eileen and Immigrant Soul are such a fun time!
Hark The Herald Angel sing
The arrangement of Hark the Herald Angel Sing is the most fantastic arrangement of a great christmas carol. Only Eileen Ivers can take a traditional chant based carol and make it a raucus fiddle fest. Also the back up singers are fantastic!!!!! The vocalist used for Wexford Carol is so warm and moving. Seeing her in concert is a treat too. I saw her playing her christmas set in concert and she was so alive with energy and power. She actually broke her bow playing the finale and kept going! If you want to feel Christmas....BUY THIS ALBUM
