Album Review

Oscar Peterson takes it easy during his relaxed set. He had not completely recovered from his stroke but he was still an impressive pianist. Peterson, who is assisted by guitarist Lorne Lofsky, bassist David Young, and drummer Jerry Fuller, is joined by a 20-piece string section arranged and conducted by Rick Wilkins. The 14 holiday tunes (which include "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman," "White Christmas," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas") are given tasteful and lightly swinging treatments and there are guest appearances by vibraphonist Dave Samuels and flugelhornist Jack Schantz. But no real surprises or chancestaking occurs and the music is mostly just pleasant.

An exemplary Christmas album

All Christmas albums should be as good as this one. The playing is impeccable. The song selection is just right, including sacred carols with some fun lighter selections. It's mellow enough to play in the background while enjoying time at home, yet substantial enough to listen to closely and appreciate the great musicianship.

Awesome

Whether you're a jazz enthusiast or not you will agree that Oscar Peterson takes Christmas to a whole new level with his virtuoso chops on this album. My wife loves it because it sounds like traditional Christmas to her ears. I love it because nobody plays the piano like Oscar Peterson. A must buy!!

Perfect Christmas

You don't need to be a huge fan of jazz to appreciate what Oscar Peterson does here. This album isn't really something you'd sing along to, but it is perfect for your holiday party to have playing in the background to add to the festive atmosphere. Laid back would be the way to describe it. It makes you want to curl up in your jammies with a cup of hot cocoa while watching the snow fall outside. Absolutely wonderful.

Oscar Peterson was one of the greatest piano players of all time. A pianist with phenomenal technique on the level of his idol, Art Tatum, Peterson's speed, dexterity, and ability to swing at any tempo were amazing. Very effective in small groups, jam sessions, and in accompanying singers, O.P. was at his absolute best when performing unaccompanied solos. His original style did not fall into any specific idiom. Like Erroll Garner and George Shearing, Peterson's distinctive playing formed during the...
