Album Review

Though they hit as hard as ever, the Bouncing Souls broaden their impact on Anchors Aweigh. Some of these tracks hide an almost reflective perspective behind Michael McDermott's vicious, in-the-pocket drumming and the rest of the band's searing riffs: "Simple Man," a marathon at just over four minutes, yearns for a more orderly life, "Night Train" runs with that thought onto the endless highway of possibilities, complete with a Steppenwolf-like motorcycle sample, and "Todd's Song" even flashes a few strings while roaring into and exiting an ear-bleed rumination on suicide. Musically, the guys are tight; McDermott in particular earns his stripes as a punk virtuoso in the artful tempo manipulations of "Apartment 5F" and the rhythmically intricate "Blind Date." Note: The last track, "I'm from There," actually clocks in at about four minutes and 46 seconds, after which there's maybe a minute and a half of crackling noise before an acoustic hidden track crawls out of the shadows, hangs around for a while, and then melts back into more crackling. Go figure. ~ Robert L. Doerschuk, Rovi

Great music

This is an amazing record, one of my favorites of all time. In my opinion, the Souls don't write bad songs anymore from this point on. For such a relatively basic and simple approach (most of these songs can be played live with one guitar, bass and drums), the songs explore a number of emotions and exude passion. ( Listen to the guitars on New Day and Simple Man for example.) The band is so good at creating and releasing tension, Highway Kings and the title track being good examples. The lyrics and concepts are on point, covering life themes that most can relate to while remaining personal and fun. What I love most is the Bouncing Souls' general attitude that shines through of passion, purpose, and enthusiasm for life and finding yourself. Listen to this album and understand why so many of their fans get Souls tattoos. Thank you Bouncing Souls for Anchors Aweigh!

The Bouncing Souls started out in 1987 with the intention of playing loud fast three-chord party music around their native New Jersey; besides, it gave them something to do while they were in high school. Upon graduation and after years of struggling to find a label to release their records, friends Greg Attonito (vocals), Pete Steinkopf (guitar), Bryan Kienlen (bass), and Shal Khichi (drums) got some money together and — in true D.I.Y. fashion — formed Chunksaah Records in 1993.
