Album Review

The husband-and-wife worship team from Denver, CO signed with Brash Music following the release of All I Need Is Here in 2007. Brash shortly re-tooled the album, switching out two tracks and re-releasing it as Ancient Skies in September 2008. Adventurous only to those who are unfamiliar with the modern worship formula, Ancient Skies sticks to prototypical messages and delivery. Where it strays from tried-and-true worship are the ventures into political ranting ("White Man") and progressive rock ("Fly"). All in all, the disc holds its weight but occasionally has difficulty holding the listener's attention. Too often you get that feeling that you've heard these songs before. To be fair, though, this could also be considered a strength since keeping things simple makes it easier to grab the ears of young listeners.

Worship band with great potential!

First off, I'm not a "fanboy" -- never heard of this band until randomly coming across the album on iTunes. Now, to those disappointed about the tracklist, obviously what happened is the CD was re-released after the band got signed. This happens all the time--get over it. To the "White Man" haters, I'm guessing you're the same people that walked out of Derek Webb's concert when he rightly declared that Jesus isn't a "white, middle-class republican." Obviously the band is trying to ruffle some of the same feathers with this song, and yet I feel they ultimately point out that God loves ALL of humanity, and he's bigger than the box we try to put him in. And thanks for the Sunday School lesson, dude, but you totally missed what they're saying. Listen to it again without a bible down your throat and you might like it... though I won't hold my breath. Personally, I love the message of this song and I can't wait bust out the banjo and casio keyboard to play it at church! And "Fly," just gotta say, holy craaaaap, my new favorite song! Love the Muse-ish ending! Never expected the song to go there, especially right after a couple of mandolin and acoustic guitar solos! I only wish the song was about 2 minutes longer so they could milk it for all it was worth. As for the rest of the album, the music and production are top notch, but I feel the lyrics are a bit lacking on some tracks. I certainly understand simplicity can be good, but the truth is, we've heard that for years in worship music and many of us are desperate for something more. Sadly, I just can't bring myself to give 5 stars to an album with songs titled "Be Praised" and "You Alone." Otherwise, a very good album--looking forward to more in the future!

GREAT!

I LOVE THE MICHAEL GUNGOR BAND! I first heard them like 4 years ago at ATF and loved them. they have been a true blessing. I was so happy to hear that they got a music label. ROCK ON! GREAT CD!!

Ancient Skies is Ridiclous Good

The first time I heard Ancient Skies I was blown away by The Michael Gungor Band's musicianship. The songs are well crafted and the arrangements are uncommonly imaginative for a worship project. The second time through, the lyrics totally messed me up. Prodigal and Glory Is Here totally wrecked me and the uptemo Say So (co-penned with Isreal Houghton) is absolute fun. White Man and Song for My Family (along with Glory Is Here) force the listener to confront the fact that following Jesus is more about unselfish love than simply rasing a moral standard. Worshipers will find this album accessable and challenging, singable and disturbing. This is the sure to be one of your favorites.
