beautiful.

beautiful tunes.

Moody, Melodic and Massive

A masterfully-crafted soundscape of layered instrumentals that begin unassuming and nostalgic, swelling into a threatening, crashing storm. Powerful.

introspective

Contemplative, thoughtful, and starkly beautiful. Glaciers’ use of repetition is blunt and constant (a hallmark of postrock), but it’s the subtle dynamics beneath that make this record really enjoyable.

The nautical imagery of the album title is fitting. Like the ocean, the music feels restrained on the surface, but hiding beneath is a tumultuous, understated swell. Bass and drums provide purposeful and plodding undercurrents that give backbone to a tightly orchestrated drone. Guitar is used smartly as rhythmic texture.

While the instrumentation might be characterized as sparse and minimalist, truthfully it’s better described as economical - doing more to evoke emotion with less than some bands can do by adding layer upon thick layer of instrument and vocals to a stew of sound.

If I had to rename the album, I might call it Soundtrack to Pre-dawn Hours because it’s a study in subtlety and shades of grey, dripping with contagious concentration and focus. Put it on and forget about it, in a wonderfully engrossing way.
