Album Review

Angel's later releases were given over entirely to the sort of pomp and glam excess that made them a virtual spot-on blueprint for '80s hair metal, and their debut certainly has Queen-ish guitar and shrill hair-sprayed aggression in abundance on numbers like "Rock & Rollers." But from the opening notes of "Tower," there's a curious admixture of progressive rock, almost entirely due to Gregg Giuffria's contributions of harpsichords, piano, and Mellotrons. Like many first albums, this one is in some ways more interesting than the more Angelic follow-ups, simply because it shows as much what routes they did not follow as which ones they did.

Underrated Classic

If you are an Angel fan you know how great this release was and still is. If you're not familiar with Angel this band was unhearlded in the 70's / 80's always in the shadows of the likes of Kiss, Nugent, Aerosmith, Boston, and Queen. However, those who witnessed Angel live and purchased their albums loved them. This was the first release by Angel and even today if you are lucky you can catch Tower on FM rock radio. Tower is a lengendary rocker and became the trademark sound of the band which consisted of the keyboard wizardry of Greg Giuffria and the guitar chops of Punky Meadows. Frank Diminios vocals were unlike any other at the time and are captured well on Long Time and Broken Dreams. This was the first of six great releases by Angel and should be the first in your Angel collection.

Angel..So who is this Angel band??

My very thoughts when hearing this album when played on a FM radio Station's Midnight Album feature. My headphones never sounded better as "The Tower" started it out. I bought this the next day as I did with their other albums I heard on FM radio. Fantastic sound and mix of electronic, metal, vocals. Dressed in White Satin the ladies loved em and they were great in concert. Tower is their anthem and Rock n Rollers right after that. Broken Dreams is a metal/electronic mix with foreboding theme. Mariner slows it down with an ethereal keyboard tune. Sunday Morning and On and On round out the album nicely. Ending with the Angel theme this is a damn good rock album and worth the price. They have this twang to the guitars much like Brian May had with Queen. I wish I hadn't sold all my actual vinyl’s of Angel once they came in on CDs in the 90s. Glam-Rockers, Metal-benders, Hair-metals...whatever your thoughts they rocked hard and sweated hard in concert. They had great rapport with the crowds. Highly recommended. :@)

You Had To Have Been There...

A great album..a wonderful time to be alive. Listening to 'Tower' brings back memories of an old friend. RIP Tom Roland.
