iTunes Review

The Ramones first four albums are now punk rock cornerstones, while the rest of their catalog is still being rediscovered as their legacy continues to grow. But in 1986 it was a tough time for the group. Commercial fortune always eluded them and punk rock had turned angrier and meaner than was suitable to their approach. Animal Boy was the band’s ninth studio album. Produced by ex-Plasmatics Jean Beauvoir, it’s a stylistic hodgepodge with several top notch tunes that coming from anyone other than the Ramones wouldn’t seem so odd. But this being the Ramones, the addition of keyboards and other pop radio production touches made for calls of “sell out.” In retrospect though it’s the punk posturing of the title track and forced tunes like “Eat That Rat” that suffer from age, whereas the glorious hooks of ‘Somebody Put Something In My Drink,” “She Belongs to Me,” and “Something to Believe In” should have made it to radio. Throw in the highly dramatic and pointed political jab of “My Brain is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)” and you’ve got one of the group’s most overlooked albums.

A Real Review...

Many people only remember this album for My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down... Hardly anyone credits the rest of the album... This album started a downward spiral in the Ramones music. They were questioning what they wanted to do, and it shows. SPSIMD starts with a good rift, but the lyrics are lacking. Animal Boy is like the first song, in the sense that it is very heavy. Love Kills is the first good song on the album, showing off all members and their skills. Apeman Hop is also very good. She Belongs to Me blows many people away, is it shows a more sensative side of the Ramones, and ACOUSTIC GUITAR. Crummy Stuff is kind of stupid but is short, so it leads to the Album's strongest song, MBIHUD. This song shows classic Ramones style as the question Ronald Regan's descions. Mental Hell is a solid song, but nothing to brag about. Eat That Rat is a cool, but short song that realy goes all over the place. Freak Of nature is actually very catchy, along with hair of a dog. Something to Belive In is a Very emotional song with a good beat. Pros: -Certain Songs Are Very Breakthrough in the Ramones Carear -Still has Ramones Attitude - She Belongs to Me Cons: -The New, heavier style kills some of the Ramones Vibe and Reputition -Some Songs are just stupid, Although they are short Bottom Line: This album is very choppy. It ranges from extreme good, to extreme bad. Its good, but a new comer should start with another album. Downloads: She Belongs to Me, My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down, Something to Belive In, Love Kills

An overly criticized record that has more each time you listen

Some critics have said that Animal Boy is too heavily polished to be "true" Ramones. Rubbish. It is an excellent outing by an excellent band. Yes, the "brothers" were trying hard to get some commercial success in this record, but that just shows that they were working hard to be more accessible and to make the songs finished, great tunes. The Who did the same thing when Glyn Johns produced "Who's Next" specifically to get some FM radio airplay and to get some hits. That record is now legendary. This is a fine album that does not deserve the harsh, "purist," reviews. There are some great tunes to listen to. Crummy Stuff is my favorite.

Biography

Formed: 1974 in Queens, New York, NY

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

The Ramones are the first punk rock band. Other bands, such as the Stooges and the New York Dolls, came before them and set the stage and aesthetic for punk, and bands that immediately followed, such as the Sex Pistols, made the latent violence of the music more explicit, but the Ramones crystallized the musical ideals of the genre. By cutting rock & roll down to its bare essentials — four chords; a simple, catchy melody; and irresistibly inane lyrics — and speeding up the tempo considerably,...
