Album Review

Animalize was more successful than the previous Lick It Up, but that's only because its predecessor had accomplished the job of restoring the band's reputation among adolescents. While it followed the same pattern as Lick It Up, most of the songs were second-rate, with the noticeable exception of the smoldering "Heaven's on Fire."

KISS rocks!!!

this album is pretty good but there are a few weird songs on here

Not the best KISS album, but certainly not the worst.

Following the success of their "unmasked" album, Lick it Up, KISS continued on sans guitarist Vinnie Vincent, who'd penned a lot of their comeback album's tunes. Loading up on songwriters like Desmond Child and ex-Plasmatic Jean Beauvoir, the songs take a turn into pop waters, veering away from the metal-like songs of their previous two discs. KISS also found a new guitarist in Mark St. John, who brings a slightly more refined guitar style (compared to Vincent) while style injecting the band with a little '80s speed noodling. The Paul Stanley songs on this album are the strongest -- "Heaven's On Fire", "Get All You Can Take", "I've Had Enough (Into the Fire)" and "Thrills in the Night". Gene Simmons' performances are downright phoned-in. Actually, Simmons didn't even play bass on a lot of the tracks because he was too busy making a movie during the recording of the album. Eric Carr's drumming is top-notch, though. All in all, Animalize is a mediocre album, but with enough stand-out songs to remain above dreck like Unmasked and The Elder.

Very Good '80s KISS Album

This is an awesome KISS album from the non-make up '80s. Lots of folks will say that this is an average album, but if you listen to the songs, you will see that it is really good. All of Paul Stanley's songs are awesome; "I've Had Enough (Into The Fire)", "Get All You Can Take", "Under The Gun", and "Thrills In The Night" are great KISS songs. The best song, "Heaven's On Fire", also happens to be my all time favorite KISS song, and I think it is LONG overdue for a spot on a greatest hits compilation. Gene Simmons' songs are kind of crappy, except for "While The City Sleeps", which I think is better than "Get All You Can Take" or "Under The Gun". Animalize did alot of good stuff for KISS, and it was more successful than the last four albums, Dynasty being the last platinum album before this one. This album proves that '80s KISS is awesome tunes.

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Rooted in the campy theatrics of Alice Cooper and the sleazy hard rock of glam rockers the New York Dolls, Kiss became a favorite of American teenagers in the '70s. Most kids were infatuated with the look of Kiss, not their music. Decked out in outrageously flamboyant costumes and makeup, the band fashioned a captivating stage show featuring dry ice, smoke bombs, elaborate lighting, blood spitting, and fire breathing that captured the imaginations of thousands of kids. But Kiss' music shouldn't be...
