the lesser known california sunshine

fans of boettcher who don't own this album yet would do well to take a listen to this collection. Songs appearing here are chiefly in the form of demos, ranging from simple formative sketches to full blown band arrangements, all a joy to hear. Those that know of the millennium's "begin" LP will recognise different early versions of "I just want to be your friend" and "the know it all" on this album, as well as the original demo for the association's "along comes mary" for which curt never got his just due co-writing credit. Those who remember "another time" as the first track on sagittarius's "present tense" LP are treated to two different early versions here, and "you know I've found a way", the version here identical to the track found on the "eternity's children" LP which featured only curt, due to time and creative constraints. Different styles emerge here which illustrate curt's love for variance, and no doubt different studios and technologies were used in this time frame which seems to straddle the line between the 1960s and 70s. Brisk drumming and unfettered energy abound on the demo for lee mallory's "that's the way it's gonna be" and also the buoyant "if you only knew". country influences that peeked out here and there with the millennium LP are once again demonstrated in tunes like "louise", "share with me", and "tumbling tumbleweeds". Towering beauty and unfamiliar chord changes shine brightly with more lavish endeavours like "sometimes" and "misty mirage". Between this album and the millennium's "pieces", there's a treasure trove of tunes to keep listeners delighted with curt's little known, but inspired writing and production talent for a long time to come.

Born and raised in Wisconsin, he began his career as a folksinger, co-founding the GoldeBriars in 1962; the group's self-titled debut album appeared on Epic two years later. Although the GoldeBriars' complex harmonies anticipated the...
